Kindergarten-Grade 2–When Grandpa Strasser comes from Germany to visit his grandchildren in Chicago, he tells them the story of how their family was involved in the creation of the famous Christmas carol. An Austrian pastor named Joseph Mohr wrote the poem, and his friend Franz Gruber set it to music. An organ repairman heard the song, memorized it, and played it at his church, where two singing families, the Rainiers and the Strassers, heard it and began singing it everywhere, helping to make it the popular carol it is today. The grandfather's telling of this tale, interrupted by quaint comments from his grandchildren, is long and not very interesting. The accompanying full-page illustrations glow with warm colors but the people in them look stiff and staged. There isn't much to appeal to children here.–E. M.

Guy's first successful Christmas drawing was in third grade. His teacher, Mrs. Passarelli, had instructed the class to draw Christmas trees. Upon seeing Guy's drawing, she stopped him and told him, 'That's perfect, don't do anything more! Don't touch it anymore!' She held Guy's drawing up to the class as an example of how a Christmas tree should look - an encouraging first encounter with an art director.

A Beautiful Book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Silent Night and look forward to sharing it with future grandchildren. It is so beautifully written and the breathtaking artwork brings back so many good memories of past Christmases.

I recommend this book not only for children but for adults as well. I have purchased this book as a Christmas gift for each of my sibling's families. They have all read this book with their families and they plan on reading this book as a new tradition each year at Christmas time.

A Christmas Treasure!

What an AMAZING book!

Myrna Strasser has written what is sure to become a Christmas classic. This is the type of book that our generation will be able to pass down for generations to come.

With a well-researched story and beautiful artwork, Silent Night, Holy Night is a book that is sure to bring families closer in the true meaning of Christmas (one that doesn't involve Santa, reindeer or pink elephants).

Introduce your family to the real story of Silent Night this year. I can say my whole family has really been blessed by it. This is a must read!

Strasser's book is a fairytale that should be steeped in history

Author Myrna A. Strasser is a descendant of the "singing Strassers" who were involved in the dissemination of the world's best-loved Christmas carol - "Silent Night". If she had only done her research for this children's book published in 2004, she could have provided children with accurate information regarding the history of "Silent Night."

Franz Gruber wrote about composing the carol so the facts were available to Strasser. I won't go through the entire tale pointing up each error in her book but will point out that the misinformation provided by the author even caused some illustrations to be inaccurate.

One illustration shows Franz Gruber walking up the aisle of the church, playing his guitar, surprising Joseph Mohr with the new carol.

It wasn't a surprise. We have Franz Gruber's handwritten testimony (from December 30, 1854 ) that Fr. Mohr asked him to set his 1816 poem to music on Dec. 24, 1818. The guitar was Fr. Mohr's and he played it while Gruber sang along at the Christmas service.

Another reviewer states, "I never knew the story of the song." Unfortunately that reviewer still doesn't know the story of the song.

Guy Porfirio's illustration of the town of Oberndorf on the Salzach River is magnificent.

Myrna Strasser owes her ancestors a better book.

Duffy's voice breaks through for an enjoyable read

Having heard Duffy speak at a youth conference, I can hear his voice come through his written words. He does such a great job bringing up topics in ministry that I either hadn't heard before and need to work through, or had heard before and gave me a different way of thinking about the topic. Great book.

Well done.

I appreciated this book's focus on practical application than a lot of theory. I feel that there are a lot of books on theory without the practical application. The topic of discipling and the balance it needs to have with evangelism is often neglected even within adult ministries let alone with youth ministry. The author speaks with a lot of passion that makes the work very compelling. I would recommend this to anyone that works in ministry of any kind, but especially those in youth ministry.

A Life Changing movie for all ages

When I first saw this movie on TNT in January 2009 I was so impressed I began an immediate search for a copy to show my adult children and my grandchildren. This movie is so inspiring for school students, for mothers, for any adult who has not had the self-discipline (myself) to do what is necessary to reach important goals. The message is "If Ben Carson could overcome all he overcame--I can do what I need to do." Now, he did have a few assets - a phenomenal mother; a core belief in God; a willingness to learn; an unusual amount of morality. He certainly deserves all the wonderful things that came into his later life. I could not find the movie in January, so I read several of his books--a good idea even if you see the movie. He has more to offer than the movie could possibly show. This movie may never win a Hollywood oscar, but it is #1 on my list of family movie greats.

Recommended but only for the right age group

We own many of the Beginner Bible series and typically I recommend them for all of my children which range in age from 2 to 7. Another reviewer states these are "cartoonish" in nature. Yes, that is true and it happens to be exactly what I like about the series. They are colorful and there is no wondering what the picture is of. These books make biblical stories come to life for small children in ways that they can understand. That being said, typically these books cover one subject and have very few words on each page so that the child can walk away with pretty good depth about the story being told. This book is a little different than most and this is why I'd recommend it for a slightly older audience of 5 to 7 year olds. This book attempts to capture Jesus entire life up through Easter through brief snippets and bible references. Subjects are covered in small doses(2-3 pages)and include His miracles, palm sunday, washing the disciples feast, the Last Supper, His arrest and crucifixtion, and Easter day. For a smaller child this is a lot of information to cover in one small book. My two year old lost interest quickly although he generally likes these books a lot. I thought it was good for my 5 year old, but in his case I needed to explain a lot more than was presented. It's nice because each section provides the scripture references so you can have your own discussions. That being said, I think you could use this book as a jumping off point for the Easter story and have some really good conversation, but it will take a bit of thought. Because each subject is covered in such small doses I felt it would be lacking to not add a litte more of the story as we went through it. The pictures are good and I think it's a nice purchase. I'd also add that this book does show Jesus carrying the cross as well Jesus nailed to the cross with Mary looking deeply saddened at his feet. I don't believe in avoiding these subjects with small children as it's part of the Easter story, but it definitely might be a lot to take in for a child under 5. I received a lot of questions from my 5 year old about how he got up on the cross, etc. The pictures are tastefully done and not in any way gruesome. Overall good Easter book and a great price.

Great for reading together with your younger child.

This review is in 2 parts--one for the actual content and the second for the suitability for the Kindle or other e-reader device.

As a story I was initially disappointed. My first thought was, considering the vocabulary, the story was too basic. The format was less of a narration and consisted more of simple statements and concepts being presented.

As I thought about it more I realized this would actually lend itself VERY well to reading together--every couple pages has a small reading, followed by an illustration and a couple sentences which would be perfect to use as discussion points--why are people jealous, why does Jesus wash the feet of the disciples and what does that mean?

This is where I give the 5 stars.

Now, regarding the Kindle version...I think the Kindle e-Ink is not the optimal presentation for this book. I love my Kindle and I think e-Ink is great for reading, but not so great for an illustration type book.

The illustrations are easy to see and look quite nice in grey scale, but just looking at the cover on the computer screen really shows how much more interesting it would be in color.

I think reading on a Kindle application on a color screen would be much more suitable, and with more screen real estate the pictures and associated words could appear on the same page. I also think the paper version is great for children, to get the tactile input of reading as well.

This is one book I would prefer either in paper or on a larger/color screen.

Definitely recommended for some interactive reading and discussions with little ones.

We love all The Beginners Bible items. This one was perfect to use for all 3 of our sons from learning to read 5 year old to our 7 and 8 year old sons who are independent readers. They love the bright art work and the way its put into words they can understand. Short pages and the Bright colors is the first thing they look for at this age. Perfect to give as a gift in a Easter basket, Sunday school or use in a homeschool class for a short lesson to add to Bible time during the Easter break.

Exceeds expectations

Unlike some study guides, this one has relevant questions to the book and its topics. Although our group is still in the middle of the study, we find many of the questions thought-provoking and stimulating discussions. The video and the author's presentation style are also very engaging. Highly recommended for any small group reading Ortberg's book. Note that reading the book is not required for this study. However, as with the video, Ortberg's writing style is interesting and engaging and can only increase the groups overall benefit upon completing all the sessions in this study.

I am an Ortberg fan anyway, but this book blows them all out of the water. He captures a look at Jesus Christ that few people take the time to look for or even look at. I feel so challenged when I am reading it, to grow and know Him more intimately.

The DVD could be appropriate for high schoolers or new Christians or in a multi-religious setting to "explain" the Jesus phenomenan. It did not seem to me to be appropriate for- that it would hold the interest of -- our adult Sunday school class.

A tender and heartwarming story of renewal

Illustrated with a superb elegance of grace and form by Rick Johnson, The Legend Of The Sand Dollar: An Inspirational Story Of Hope For Easter by Chris Auer is the story of an eight-year-old girl who learns the story of Easter in the sand dollar. The five holes in the sand dollar shell (only dead sand dollars wash up on beaches, and live sand dollars shouldn't be collected, the author notes in the very back of the book) symbolize the nails and the spear that pierced Jesus Christ, who died for humanity's sins. And when the sand dollar is broken, there appear five white particles representing doves and their promise of new life - the promise of Easter. A tender and heartwarming story of renewal.

An amazing children's book for anytime!

I bought this book to use for a Women's Retreat based on Anne Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea - all the mom's and grandmom's on the committee plan to buy one for their own children, as I imagine others on the retreat will do as well. It is a beautiful presentation of the Easter story using one of God's gifts from the sea!

The publication of these books coincides with Landry's induction into the National Football League Hall of Fame this month. Bayless, a Dallas columnist and sportswriter who has covered the Dallas Cowboys since 1978, looks behind the publicity and Image (with a capital I) of "America's Team." Although Bayless stresses that Landry is a good person, the book is uncomplimentary toward Landry's coaching ability and the Dallas front office. Bayless's anecdotes and interviews reveal the lack of substance behind the Landry and Cowboy image. Though the author's often too-cute word play sometimes gets in the way of his narrative, overall the book gives an interesting outsider's perspective on Landry's reign in Dallas. In stark contrast to Bayless's account, Landry's autobiography perpetuates the image that has earned him the respect of so many people. From his early days in Dallas to life after his controversial firing, Landry addresses many of the same incidents Bayless discusses, but their perspectives and explanations differ significantly. Don't expect any surprising revelations. Although the Christian influence on Landry and his "aww shucks" naivete seem overemphasized, Landry shows his skill as a motivating speaker and his genuinely "nice guy" personality. Revealing

Having been a lifelong Cowboys fan I saw this book and had to read it. The first thing I found upon reading it was that total honesty of Coach Landry and the guts it took to wither all the storms life can throw at one person. I found that, even though it deals worth football, there are lessons that are applicable to everyday life. This would be a great book for all school children to be assigned to read. It shows what can happen when one person puts faith and families and principles ahead of instant gradification.

About More than Just Football

America is a sports-crazy nation. Tom Landry's career is worth reading about because it parallels the rise of professional football in the U.S. His rise from the tiny town of Mission, Texas to building a football dynasty is inspirational because through years of losing he had the determination and faith to stick with his plan for winning. A major factor in this was his faith.

Landry's narrative is also intertwined with larger historical events. His older brother Robert died during WWII when the B-17 bomber he was in disappeared over the Atlantic en route to England. At age 18, the younger Landry enlisted and eventually flew 30 B-17 missions over Europe. Another aspect of history--after President Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, the Cowboys were booed at every game they played for the rest of the season, and into the next.

There are some great lessons on leadership in the last chapter that are applicable in any context.

For all he did, Landry certainly didn't deserve the kind of dismissal he got at the end of his career.

A "Sleeper".

There are some great lessons on leadership and character in this book. Landry's strong faith and belief system helped shape the morality of many that came in contact with him. His vision on life is based on a high value system. He is a perfectionist and a great strategist who believes that preparation is always the key, which I also agree. After reading this book you will walk away with a new layer of tenacity, an increased will to be challenged, and a new resolution to embrace patience more.
