Great help in looking at our past to ensure happier futures

A-plus! This is a GREAT book that helped me understand how my past affected every area of my life (work, relationships, and my underlying attitudes). Although I had experienced great success in the business world, my personal relationships were suffering terribly and I was miserable on the inside. This book helped me understand why and how to change.
It clearly explained the important things I needed but didn't get out of each developmental stage while growing up from an infant to an adult. While reading the book, it became clear how I developed coping mechanisms to get through life--trying to get my needs met--with mixed results. On the outside, I was a picture of success, but on the inside I was tired, empty, unhappy and frustrated.
With this understanding, and a continued commitment to find new ways to think, act and live, I am now learning to live a life that promises to be happier and healthier. Thanks Dr. Cloud for your part in bringing about these changes in me!
I highly recommend other books written by Henry Cloud's (Safe People, Boundaries) as they are also well written and very good resources for healing the innermost areas of the heart and minds to help enjoy the journey to wholeness and joy!
'Changes That Heal' is a book that is informative and life changing. Change and Healing IS possible! Definitely worth reading! A-plus!

Image Bearers

What does it mean to be made in the image of God? People sometimes say that it means we have free will, or we have emotions and intellect, or we have a spirit. In Changes that Heal, Cloud describes part of his own theory of what it means to bear the image of God on this planet. He describes four major areas that are involved in bearing God's image: 1. Bonding to others 2. Separating from others 3. Sorting out good and bad in ourselves and others 4. Becoming an adult. For each of these four areas, he points out the picture we have in scripture of God's nature as He operates in the specific area, then describes how this aspect of man was broken in the fall, and suggests ways to move toward healing. The book is especially helpful when it describes case studies from Dr. Cloud's practice and shows which symptoms, or life problems, may result from failure to grow up in each of the areas.

There are a few weaknesses in the book. He doesn't include enough practical how-to for someone seeking healing, possibly because this requires help from healthy relationships and/or professionals. Also, the writing style tends to ramble and get a little tedious. You have to be pretty dedicated to getting the information in order to plod through to the end. Although the subject matter is not exactly duplicated, for a book along the same lines I much prefer John Townsend's Hiding from Love.

Bonding, how to say "no", learning that people are neither all good nor all bad are points that Dr. Henry Cloud explains in a biblical and tangible way. The book is well-written, broken up in understandable sections and gives you something to think about at every turn. The author pulls from many people's life experiences and there are many examples of everyday people that you can relate to. You will find examples that help you understand the points he is trying to point out. This book is a must read.
There is a work book which goes along with the book, but Changes That Heal stands alone or can be enhanced by the workbook.

A wonderful book to read, hear and see with your children!

My Father's Angels is a wonderful book that makes one feel good just reading it. The pictures are whimsical, warm and comforting, all adjectives that are perfect when reading to a small child. Reminding children that they can feel safe with angels all around them is a great concept to teach them at a young age. The cassette which accompanies the book is beautifully sung by children and perfectly matches the book. I couldn't think of a single way to improve on the book or the cassette. The illustrations in the book make me smile. I can think of no better way to picture angels. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to parents of young children. This book would make an excellent gift for parents-to-be. Grandparents, parents and friends could give this book with the assurance that it would be happily received.

Top notch art, a charming story, and a classic song.

I was so impressed with the beautiful art in this book. Bright colors, kids with adorable faces, and angels like we've never imagined them before are just a few of the highlights.
The popular song, "My Father's Angels" is cleaverly woven through the story of kids' lives and ends up at church where you see the kids act out the traditional nativity!
This is a very very cool book!

A Good Story - but it isn't HARDBOUND.. it is a BOARD BOOK

The is a nice christmas story. A story to read with family and friends during the season... and brings a spirit of remembrance towards the life & gifts of Christ.
But be forwarned - this book is not what I expected as a "HARDCOVER" book (ie a hardbound hardback book). It is a BOARDBOOK (a book where each page is made of thick cardstock).
If you want a book in this format... this is a good story to have in your childrens library.

Already a Favorite!

Not at all what I was expecting…

When I read the word “hardcover”, I assumed it was a regular hardcover book but what arrived in the mail was a board book.

Imagine my surprise…

Regardless of my surprise, my children LOVE it! Even though it is simple enough for a very young child to enjoy, my children (who are 8 and 11) are enchanted with the beautiful story inside!

My daughter has claimed it for her very own. She took it OFF of my shelf and proudly carried it to her own, where she gave it a place of honor.

My son is not quite as possessive of it but he stood over her shoulder as she read and did not once have a comment about it being a “baby” book – which is his usual comment about any book his sister who is three years younger, picks up to read.

Not that I can blame him… since he is reading on a high school level already.

But I think it says a lot about how wonderful the story within!

I am actually excited! Now, instead of donating the book, we have what will become an heirloom!

Exciting!

And no… we don’t have any other board books we will be able to pass on, none of them survived my own children. I’m so very thankful they are both learning to appreciate books now – being cautious with them and cherishing their favorites.

And The Legend of the Candy Cane is clearly already a favorite!

Awesome Board Book - Story Hope

This is an adorably written and illustrated board book, perfect for your child from ages 4-8 about the “Legend of the Candy Cane”. What better way to teach your little one about the love of God and the promise of hope through the candy cane.

What more can I say about the story of the candy cane? Although I have read the legend many times, it still gives me a sense of hope and love each time. This book is well written in easy to understand language for the little ones and so beautifully illustrated right down to the cat on the shelf and the mouse on the scales. The pictures alone will insure that the child who cannot yet read will spend lots of time looking at the pictures. This is a book your little ones will want you to read to them over and over again.

This would be a perfect book to impress upon your little ones there is more to Christmas than receiving gifts…they will learn in this book that God gave them the perfect gift…Salvation when Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Highly recommend this book! A must read for the Christmas season.

books for horse crazy kids

I bought the Bob the Horse series of books for my first grader who is horse crazy and a weak reader. She wants to read these books and they are not too hard for her reading level. I wish there were more in the series, as horse books for early readers are difficult to find.

For my grandchild

My granddaughter loves horses & she was struggling with reading starting into the 1st grade. I got this for her on the Kindle Fire to encourage her to start reading for pleasure - not just because she has to. With the work the school put in with her and books like this about topics she really likes, she has now excelled in reading! Another plus are the values/morales these books teach - the children are presented with a situation where there is a right & a wrong... it follows their decisions in dealing with those situations & the final outcome based on those decisions well.

Little Things Can Cause Big Problems

A little girl messed up a garden while riding her horse. She decided not to say anything because "it was such a little thing". Although she got away with it, she was not okay. Her horse started having a problem walking. It turned out to be a little thing that caused a problem with the horse. This story helps children learn that not telling the truth can be a big problem even when you think it is no big deal.

Amazing book

I highly recommend this for everyone to read. Philip Yancey really gives you insight. I never thought about a lot of things he writes about Jesus. Couldn't put this book down. Have two chapters left in Disappointments with God and full of insight. I really understand the book of Job more than I did. Great book.

After my three year old fell in love with the popular Bible song about the big fish swallowing Jonah, I couldn't resist picking up this book when I saw it. The "I Can Read" nature of this book obviously makes it great for beginning readers but it also helps to make the Biblical stories easy to understand for younger children. The stories are Biblically correct, the illustrations are fun and colorful and the text is easy to read and understand, even for the youngest children! We can't wait to add more of these books to our collection!

great story

this is a "sweet" story with great illustrations and a nice message for children. the religious aspects are front-and-center, so if that bothers you, then this might not be the book for you. but if you're looking for a non-biblical way for your kids to hear the message that God loves them even when they make mistakes, this is a good one.

What a wonderful lighthearted book on repentance!

This was our first ever Mrs. Rosey Posey book but it will definitely not be our last.

My girls loved this book. When Sarah found herself in an interesting predicament regarding the cake my twins could not decide what she was going to do. When she hides...it was perfect time to explain how we can hide from people but never from God. Mrs. Rosey Posey's response was kind, loving and totally glorifying to God.

I found this to me one of my favorite Christian children's books. I loved the way Robin Gunn clearly explained the idea of "repentance" and God's ever loving response to our true repent. She worded it in such a way that little minds could grasp the idea of forgiveness with out being too flowery or over their heads.

My favorite part was the ending when Sarah and Mrs. Rosey Posey discuss how friends love each other even when they dont' agree. That is a value that I try very hard to instill in my girls. I want them to understand that my love for them is unconditional as well...even if I don't agree with their actions.

Hat's off to Robin for creating a powerful message in a kid's book that is subtle and easy to understand. Great moment for discussion were made from this little book! I Hope More Mrs. Rosey Posey Books Are Coming Soon!

Now that my son is in Kindergarten and starting to read, I am always looking for books that he and I can read together. Zondervan offers several in their "I Can Read" series.

If the author's name - Robin Jones Gunn - rings a bell, you may be familiar with her teen and adult books. I grew up reading the Christy Miller series which I highly suggest for all high school girls. This author is incredibly gifted because she has done a wonderful job on her children's series as well.

Mrs. Rosey Posey and the Yum-Yummy Birthday Cake - A lesson in forgiveness. The children learn the importance of repentance and forgiveness from Mrs. Rosey Posey. The lesson is explained very well for even those children who aren't reading yet. Wonderful series to help with character education.
