Incredibly Disappointed...

Before I begin I do want to clarify that the book we have is The Beginner's Bible for Toddlers. (It is the board book and not the paper paged book that has many more stories in it.)
As I read this book to my 4 month old son I really enjoyed the illustrations and the abbreviated stories from the Old and New Testaments. I got to the end of the book only to notice that the most important truth of the whole Bible was missing... This book skipped from the healing of the blind man to Jesus' ascension into heaven. I was amazed that the editors of this book would actually skip the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. I understand that Jesus' death can sound offensive and isn't pretty but even if they skipped the violent and gory parts of the crucifixion our children NEED to know the truth about Jesus. This is incredibly unacceptable because the most basic and fundamental story/truth of the whole entire Bible is that of Jesus dying for our sins and being raised on the 3rd day...
"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with Scriptures..." 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

which is currently best for my 2 year old

I purposely bought this book because it came in a board book format, which is currently best for my 2 year old. I had not really seen any board book Bibles so I was really happy to come across this. I love that the cover is thick and that it resembles the regular beginner's Bible, which we also own. My son was pretty excited when he saw it which made me happy. I love the illustrations and the simplicity of the writing. I would love if there was a small set of these so that you could have more than just a handful of Bible stories as a board book. Since there is just the one, I do wish that they had chosen stories that go more together so that the flow is more pleasing, at least to the parent. It seems so random but I imagine they chose what stories they felt were important. However, since I bought this Bible because of the board book format and I expected less content, I cannot really complain about that too much. I would recommend this Bible in the format I bought it in for children who are not quite ready for regular books but like to turn the pages themselves or just like to sit and "read" on their own. Some may feel it a waste since there aren't many stories, in which case just get the regular version and keep it in a safe place.

Be careful when ordering, there are two different books here

I wanted to write a review to make sure you check which book you have selected before ordering. There are two completely different books here. One is a paper version, the other a board book. I thought I was ordering a board book from reading the reviews, and mistakenly ordered the paper version. (the only reason I took off a star) I ordered the board book then, so now I have both. I do like both for two different ages. I have always loved the Beginner's Bible series, and these are no exception. My only suggestion is that the paper version should not be called "for Toddlers". This is a perfect level for my first grader to take to church and read on his own. He doesn't like the fact that it says for toddlers though, so I am going to have to put stickers over those words so he will carry it. The board book, however, is toddler appropriate.

Great Gift

My 11 year old son wanted a smaller Bible like his friend has. He had a children's Bible but is outgrowing it. This Bible has a quality feel to it and it is a convenient size to take to church. The theme is "The Armor of God". There are colored pages interspersed that picture and explain the armor. These relate well to a pre-teen boy and even include a few challenges for him to make a stand for what is right. The version is NIV which is a easy for him to understand.

Very impressed

I taught a Chivalry class in a homeschool co-op last year to a group of boys. During the class we memorized Ephesians 6 and learned about knightly virtues and all kinds of fun stuff. Their reward at the end was this Bible. I wasn't sure what to expect, since the age posted was younger than my group, but we were very happy with the Bibles. Lots of good feedback, so we're going to do it again this year. Beautiful Bibles, and something that the boys were proud of.

Perfect for little hands

I ordered this Bible as a gift for a friend's son.

The cover is genuine leather (I hadn't noticed that) so that was a "plus."

The cover is great... and the size is just right for a child to carry around easily.

The print is small but it is a personal size Bible. Young eyes should have no trouble with the print.

I love Kim Vogel Sawyer's books, and this book was no exception! Katy Lambright is a young mennonite girl without a mother and is in essence, trying to find herself. She gets permission to attend a public high school, and makes some new friends there. Kim makes the character of Katy act as any normal teenager with conflicts and adventures. I like Katy. She has spunk, and determination as well as Christian values.
The book is a very good read. I will save it for my two daughters to read when they get old enough, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone--not just the younger audience.

Blackboard Jungle - Mennonite Style

Ok first before we even start, I need to mention this is NOT a book about the Amish. Yes I know the girl on the front looks Amish, but she is not. She is Mennonite which, while similar, is quite different in what they believe and how they act.

This book is quite unique because for the first time (that I can remember) a teen character who normally shuns the outside way of life choosing to live in that life. Katy is from a strict Mennonite family but is allowed to pursue her dream of higher education by attending the public high school in her area. I found this to be quite interesting as normally most characters who come from strict lifestyle usually give up and return home by the end of the first book. The story doesn't mention which sect Katy's family is in but from what I gathered in the book they appear to be quite conservative than most other Mennonites. Other books I've read that features Mennonite vs. Amish shows the Mennonites as being practically English other than their dress and what they believe. In this book, it's mentioned that Katy's dad has a truck but other than that I didn't really see what made them different from the Amish other than actual religious beliefs.

What makes this book stand out for me was the fact that Katy was NOT portrayed a goody two shoes. Even though she almost always obeys her father and abides by the rules of her community, she does not act passive and reject every unknown idea. For the most part, Katy asks like a regular teen and shows that even though she will always be different there are parts of her that just wants to fit in. Also even if she can't say things because she knows that she would get in trouble, her thoughts are a different matter which really make things more realistic. Basically the story allows Katy to be both Mennonite and a normal teen and shows equal balance without upsetting either party.

I felt like this book was targeted at younger teens but older teens will enjoy it as well. I think this book was more of an introduction to the characters as well as Katy getting a first taste of the outside world. Perhaps in future books she'll be faced with more difficult challenges that everyday teens face. It will be interesting to see what her Mennonite perspective will be. I will also find it interesting as to what will happens when tougher school subjects are introduced, like using computer research at home or if we get to the point of Katy graduating and what will happen next. As it stands, I have great hopes for this series and am looking forward to future books.

Well done, large print

This edition has nice large print, and classical cover (dark blue leather imitation). Fine translation, footnotes, maps to study.

It is very inexpensive, but the quality is great. Great translation. Really good edition. Of course the size of the book is bigger, because of the print.And I would say, this size of print is really easy to read, not like those tiny, tiny letters.I really recommend it.A friend of mine who has several bibles but had trouble to read them, also said this is the best bible he has ever had, and this one he can really read.

Great Bible for Young Readers

We have purchased this Bible for each of our kids when they reached an age when they could read well. We just gave the latest copy to our daughter in kindergarten as a reward when she reached a reading goal in school.

We love this Bible for the following reasons:
1. The NIrV is a great translation for our kids because it is accurate, readable (3rd grade reading level) and it is quite similar to the NIV - which is the version my wife and I use and the one our pastor preaches from
2. It is a real study Bible -- not a kid's abridged story Bible. Each book includes a brief introduction (who wrote the book, why was it written, what happens, etc.) and contains the full text of the Bible.
3. The text is easy to read and the look is inviting and interesting so that our kids read and look through it on their own (text is blue and red).
4. It includes questions and Biblical answers to a wide range of questions kids ask. For example, "What is a parable?" and "What is so bad about cheating in sports?"
5. It is a Bible that our kids will continue to grow with (at least, until teenagers, probably).
6. It is good for both boys and girls. We have found that a Bible cover is helpful to add that personal touch (e.g. camouflage for our son and pink for our daughter).

In summary, we love this Bible and think it is a great Bible to help your kids gain a passion for studying God's Word...

Exceptional Bible for children

Zondervan has always been known for its excellent products and this is no exception. What a wonderful Bible for kids ages 5-12, and even for adults! Written at a third garde reading level, this Bible is easy to understand and I enjoyed reading the answers to questions that kids (and yes, even adults) ask about God, heaven, and the world around them. The use of blue and red for the print is eye catching and easy on the eyes (and yes, much less boring too) The illustrations are cute and made me smile often. A dictionary and topical index is included. Parents and grandparents, no need to hesitate on the purchase of this particular Bible. Much time and effort has been expended to make it as easy to understand while being true to the original text as possible. I even recommend this to adults who find themselves confused by other versions.

Best children's Bible we've owned

We bought this Bible for our son two years ago, when he was 7 years old. He loves it! The text is very readable and understandable, the layout on the page is very easy on the eyes, and he especially loves the insets with questions and Biblical answers. I've found them to be very solid, and enjoy reading and discussing them with him. We bought a different Bible for our older son, who was 10 at the time, and find that he much prefers this Bible to his own. In church, they'll both start out with their Bibles open on their laps, but in no time at all, our older son is leaning over, reading over his brother's shoulder.

My only gripe with it is that both the front and back cover tore off, but that is probably due more to the heavy use it got than any defect in the manufacture. I'd definitely recommend a Bible cover to help prolong the life of the book. He is gradually losing the book of Revelation.

Probably the best testimony I can give is the fact that we are buying a new copy of the same Bible for him as a replacement. We couldn't be more satisfied.

Great for teaching kids biblical world view

I would definitely recommend the Case for Christ, Case for Faith, and Case for the Creator FOR KIDS! I got this series for my 9 year old son to help me with teaching him a biblical world view. Our public school system and media is so full of contradictory information, I want my son to rest firmly on the TRUTH! So I decided to find something he could read that would be on his level… We have started A Case for Christ together and he really seems to be enjoying it.

If you are looking for other items to teach biblical world view, I also recommend The Answers Book For Kids Vol 1, 2 ,3, and 4. which has answers to 88 of their most difficult questions regarding the Bible, God, sin, dinosaurs, the Flood of Noah, salvation, and more!

I purchased this title to increase my 10 year old's defense of her faith and it has fostered good discussions and further inquiry into other topics. I highly recommend this book and others in the series.

Great for kids

I have an 8-year old daughter who we've always encouraged to think through beliefs. This past year we've wanted her to understand why our family believes certain tenants in the Christian faith. These books have been really helpful for her and have provided great discussion topics for our family. They're written for kids using their language, includes illustrations, stories and good questions to think about and discuss. We also have a good number of families and kids at our church that are not Christian but have questions that "The Case for..." series has really helped in processing. While the books come from a Christian background and is written by a leading Christian apologetics author, it's good for both religious and non-religious kids and families.

Nice balance between scholar and layman

These commentaries provide good in-depth examination of the Scriptures for those preparing sermons or Bible study classes. More technical, scholarly issues, such as the finer points of Hebrew language translation, are addressed in separate notes. They also provide excellent value for the money.

It is ok

I already had the participants guide from the bible study group. I wanted my own copy of the dvd. The special offered when I bought this was cheaper than only getting the DVD. I thought the "Study Guide" that came with this dvd would be different than the "Participants Guide". Now I have a duplicate I don't need. Why is the same book named two different things? Please pass this on to the publisher. I'm not sure this was an Amazon problem.

Using it over 12 weeks in a Bible study

Love the book, had gotten the nook version this fall on sale and saved it to read on a long plane flight. It is/was fabulous and would literally change the world if I could get every woman to read and apply it!

I'm leading a Bible study at church and we are using the DVD and guide. We add in prayer time and meet 1 1/2 hours so we're doing each lesson over 2 weeks. The homework is pretty light this way which may not be enough for some but we prefer to be able to know we can get it done than be overwhelmed. The ladies are enjoying the scenery and word pictures/illustrations created. We don't seem to fill out much as we watch (there are pages for this to put in thoughts/comments) but we are using all the material for group discussion.

Great small group study

Actually, my small group study is not so small anymore as the ladies are bringing friends and family. My women's group is in the middle of this study and the feedback has been very enthusiastic. The ladies feel it is very relevant to them. As a leader I like it because as always, Lysa stays on track with a Godly perspective. The discussion questions are great and lead to both conversations that flow easily and meaningful reflection by the participants. I would highly recommend this to other women's groups...I can't imagine it not being a hit.

Ray Vander Laan holds a Master’s of Divinity from Westminster Seminary and is enrolled in the doctoral program at Trinity International University. He is an instructor of religion at Holland Christian High School. Ray has been intrigued with the meaning and message of Jesus Christ since childhood. Having extensively studied Jewish culture, history, and geography, Ray developed "Israel in Depth," an on-site study program with a decade-long waiting list.
