Great devotional for preteen girls

While looking for a devotional to use with our 9 year old daughter, I found this one. The format is great, Each devotional is about a behavior or attitude, one day will be the negative or sinful behavior, the next day the positive or godly behavior. Each devotion features a scripture verse, a narrative, 3 examples of girls in these situations, where the reader decides who is or isn't displaying said behavior, a prayer and finally additional scripture for a deeper study.

Our daughter is 9, a few years below the target audience, but still I feel this is a great tool, since she can identify with most of the situations even is she hasn't faced them herself. Her favorite part is picking out which girl is doing right in the "What's a girl to do?" section.

Draws children into book to answer their questions

One of my favorite pairs of writers and illustrators for Christian children's books is Larry Libby and Corbert Gauthier. Larry seems to really have a gift for how to communicate with a child. Corbert, on the other hand, has a wonderful gift for illustration using bold colors, light and shadow in a way that draws the child and the parent into the illustration. "Who Made God?" is a children's book that discusses a lot of the normal questions that kids ask (and sometimes grownups too). Questions include "If God Made Everything, Then Who Made God?", "What Does God Look Like?", "Why Did God Make People?", "How Much Does God Love Me?", "What Does God Do All Day?", and "How Can I Know for Sure that I'll Go to Heaven?". For Christian families this is a highly recommended book that should be at hand once a child gets old enough to start asking questions like this.

Beuatiful book

The pictures and illustrations in this book are absolutely gorgeous, I loved looking through it. I also like the answers to all the questions; I appreciate they cited bible verses to base them on. I got this for a friend, she's not a child but I think anyone can appreciate the art here and everyone has questions about faith sometimes. I think it's a great book for kids and adults alike.

pretty good

i remember reading this book like three years ago and i was so eager to read it in school everyday.
this is from what i remember: awful alvin creats these things called earwacks,not real ones, that when you get them in your ears he commands you to do stuff and you can only hear him. Junior ends up getting information and larry or a.k.a. lgrryboy finds it about. Except half of it turns out to be wrong and larryboy ends up getting the ear wacks.

The book ks pretty funny but not the best but I give it four stars. its funny how alvin chose to control everyone once larryboy and all the children had he earwacks. For some reason he had everone country dance or something.

Its also cool how the author tells about awful alvin's life like how he lived underground to be with coakroaches. Awful alvin doesnt seem that evil despite his crazy plans and his only friends is a LAMP but he can be really mean. he is the only villain from larryboy who actually refrenced to God but not in a good way; he said his invention would stop people from listening to a bubch of people but he said even God in the end of that sentence. This goes with the lesson. The lesson is great too about how we must listen to only the wise. That way we only obey what is right.

Larryboy Again!

This is the second in the Larryboy series and the first that I read.

This is adorable, centering around the message of being a good listener.

Awful Alvin, with the "help" of Lampy, has been placing "Ear Wacks" (no, that's not a typo) into the ears of children claiming they'll hear only what they want to hear.

Larryboy goes to stop them, however, he quickly falls prey to their trap. Who will save Bumblyburg when its own superhero is in danger?

I really liked this one. It reminded somewhat of "The Angry Eyebrows", especially bringing Awful Alvin back. He's my favorite of the villians, and while he's not as entertaining here as in, say, the Abominable Trashman, he's still good for a laugh. (Check out his "onion ring" monolouge in Chapter Thirteen, I think it was.)

His list of "awful deeds" had me cracking up. (GASP, he had them mixing recycbles in with regular garbage and taking cuts in line at the movies, and horror of horrors, RIPPING TAGS OFF MATTRESSES. Yeah, I know, he's nuts.)

Larryboy is still cute, though he doesn't seem to have much mery on Awful Alvin in the second-to-last chapter.

Although this isn't the best, it's still worth reading.

What a great book!

This is one of my favorite books in the whole Larryboy series.

It's funny, it has my favorite villian, and it has a great lesson in listening.

Awful Alvin the onion and his sidekick Lampy the um... lamp put small devices in Larryboy's plunger ears so that he can only listen to him and no one else. Next, he plans to have all the little kids at the Elementry School in Bumblyburg to put them on.

They do, and he commands them to do some crazy things. Some examples are putting wet paint signs on bushes, benches, and doors, and replacing number two pencils with number three pencils. That's his idea of "Awful."

I think Awful Alvin is a great villian. Most everyone I know who has heard of him thinks he's great too. I'm sure you'll like Lampy, too. If you decide to get this book, I know you'll read it over and over again just like I do.

Also, you'll learn a valuable lesson in listening!

Help through Grief...

Jake Bryan is a firefighter with the FDNY, the only thing he has ever wanted to do. His Christian faith gives him the strength to get through each day, both on the job and at home. His wife Jamie has run from God most of her life. After a tragic childhood, she doesn't believe God would want anything to do with her or her failures. She worries constantly about Jake and his safety. The two have a daughter, Sierra, who is the light of their lives. Jake has been praying for God to make a statement in Jamie's life to bring her to know Him.
Eric Michaels is a businessman striving for success at any cost. And his greatest cost is his family. He has slowly shut out his wife and young son. His wife is at the end of her rope. When Eric returns from his business trip to New York, she is not sure whether she can continue marriage with him or not.
These men meet in the stairwell of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The tower collapses and only one survives, burned and suffering from amnesia. Jake's supervisor recognizes the man as Jake, but is it really him? Jamie works with him to re-gain his lost memory, and in the process learns about God and her husband through his Bible and journals. Which man survived the disaster? Can God redeem even those who seem completely lost?
I was touched by this fictionalized account of the calamity that affects us all. Ms. Kingsbury states that it was her way of working through the grief, and I am glad she wrote this book. The characters are very true to life, seeking God's will as well as running from it. Eric and Jamie go through tremendous transformation as God becomes real to both of them. It would be difficult to finish this novel and remain closed about God's hand in our lives.
I highly recommend ONE TUESDAY MORNING. It isn't a book that can be read all in one sitting. It takes time to experience, especially the scenes that take place on September 11. I felt as if I was right there with the characters in the book. For an emotional, yet uplifting look at God's everlasting love and mercy in our lives, ONE TUESDAY MORNING is not to be missed.

Very Moving -- Especially for those who have been there.

I cannot possibly recommend this novel highly enough! Kingsley's work reminds us again what it is to be human.

On the morning of 9/11 I, like the rest of the country, sat is absolute horror and shock, watching the events in NY unfold on television. I thought instantly of a dear friend who daily stopped at one of the towers for coffee and a bagel before taking the train into the city. Where was my dear friend that day? As the towers fell, I feared he was somewhere at the bottom of that smoking pile of rubble and I wouldn't get the chance to tell him one more time how very treasured his friendship is to me and how dearly I love him.

The emotions of the women in this novel were so true to what I experienced for 3 days until I finally got a phone line into Brooklyn to check on my friend and heard his voice on the other end, that I cried through most of this book. I could relate to the fear of the unknown and how essential prayer and my faith was to me then and continues to be today. Thankfully my dear friend was alive and well, but for so many whose story had a different ending, the pain continues.

This novel reminds us that, regardless of ethnicity or color of skin, we are all of one race -- human -- and we all bleed, laugh, cry, and love. What a spectacular novel this one is!

A strange mix of fantastic and cringeworthy.

This is one of those books that I wanted to love but I couldn't quite manage it.

There is some fantastic stuff in here. I thought that Kingsbury's depiction of the atmosphere inside the TWC and those watching at home or close by was brilliant. Although of course one knows what is going to happen, the tension and terror is portrayed magnificently and I can find little or no fault with almost all those scenes. I vividly remember seeing the second aeroplane hit, and Kingbury really took me back to that memory and helped me really feel like I could imagine what it must have been like for those inside the towers.

Although I thought it was a little clunky, I also felt that the last scene before the collapse of the South Tower, the fear of those within, the reaching out to Jesus, was very moving.

Unfortunately one of the major plot points of the book (a case of mistaken identity) stretched to breaking point my suspension of disbelief. It's easy to imagine that in the immediate aftermath mistakes would have been made and desperate peple would "recognise" survivors as people they desperately hoped had lived, but fairly quickly I felt that the doubts raised (ie over blood type) would have been swiftly checked and the truth known. It just feels a little ridiculous that, even in this desperate situations, so many weeks would pass and so many clues or discrepencies would be glossed over before the truth began to emerge. Just for example: if I were a nurse in ICU and someone queried the blood type, I would not assume anything - I would check. I know a heck of a lot of nurses amongst my family and friends and it just seems unbelievable that anyone in the profession would be so remiss.

I can readily see why she used this trope, but for me it just made too many chunks of the second half of the book veer off the "dramatic and moving" road that she had set up and become silly or cringeworthy, even verging on the absurd at times. Given the real life stories behind the book, and some really evocative writing, that to me felt like a huge let-down.

So... good and bad: overall the good stuff makes me say, yes, it's well worth a read, but I can't in good conscience leave a glowing review when there is so much that I really felt was handled so badly, especially in view of the emotive subject matter. The mistaken identity story that was so stretched out seemed to, albeit unintentionally, make a mockery of some really good writing. Given that this is based on real life experiences and tragedy, that seems a great shame.

As with a majority of Christian books there are many times one feels it would have benefitted from one last pass by a really good editor, but this is such a common complaint with Christian fiction that I can't put any blame on Kingsbury herself. I have certainly read worse in that regard.

An excellence work

A reader who comes to this book with a desire to help others grow in their ability to help others (and open mind, obviously) will benefit from this work of Dr. Tan. It is practical in the material covered; this includes the gamut from paraprofessional counselor selection to training and supervision - even the easily neglected area of evaluation. He also provides useful resources (sample questionnaires) and other organizations which one might contact for further assistance. Tan's survey of the writings in this field is not comprehensive and is weaker in the area of research support. However, when this was written there was less work done than there is now, and I understand research not only supports what he has written, but that he plans to ipdate his book and include this material in a new edition. The reader below is clearly trying to play an immature joke on someone or is simply prejudiced and antagonistic to people having differing beliefs than his or her own.

The best book on the topic on Lay Counseling

I have thoroughly enjoyed Tan's work. There is very little information on this topic in print. There are alot of goofballs out doing seminars but his offers some of the best and sound advice out there. Dr Tan brings a very thorough researced approach to this very needed ministry. It should not be considered comprehensive since it is dated and lay counseling is subjective to state law. I have researched several lay counseling ministries and found that the information given here is extrememly helpful.

I love Lysa's books. She speaks straight from the heart, is honest, and I can so relate to the examples she shares from her own life. I highly recommend any of her books and study guides. I lead a small group bible study and we're using one of her books (Unglued). Our first one was "Becoming More Than A Good Bible Study Girl". Her participants guide for her books and the DVD's are so life changing because they're packed with God's Worss and how it is practical for our everyday life. I bought "Made to Crave" for personal use but it may be book #3 for our next study
