John H. Jeff Manion (jeffmanion.org) is the senior pastor of Ada Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he has served for over thirty years, and is the author of The Land Between and Satisfied. About the Author

Dandi Daley Mackall loves God, children, words, and animals. Her nearly 500 books for children and grown-ups have sold more than four million copies worldwide. Overall, a great story

Natalie Really Very Much Wants to Be a Star by Dani Daley Mackall is the third book in the "That's Nat!" series. These chapter books are unique in that they are thinner (this one is 93 pages of large text) and have more illustrations than many other chapter books, making them ideal read-to books for kids ready to move away from picture books, and great reading for children whose reading skills are growing.

In this installment, five year old Nat discovers her Sunday school class is putting on a Christmas play for the entire congregation. Nat is sure she'll grow up to be a movie star, and covets the role of Mary. She doesn't just want the part. No, Nat thinks she needs the part. When Nat's Sunday school teacher says she has a special announcement, Nat thinks:

"I LOVE 'nouncements! 'Nouncements are when you know something other people don't. And you tell them. And they say 'Ah!' or 'Wow!' 'Nouncements could be telling you that you are going to Disneyland. Like, 'I have a 'nouncement! We will all be going to Disneyland for Sunday school.' Or, it can be other stuff. Like, 'I have a 'nouncement. This year, Christmas will not take so long to get here. And there will be more presents!'"

But Nat's Sunday school teacher announces she's cast a different girl as Mary. Nat is cast as a tree. Maybe, Nat thinks, she doesn't want to be in the play afer all. And maybe the season is going to be lousy this year, all around, because Nat really needs a princess castle Christmas present, even though her parents tell her it costs as much as a refrigerator - and they've already bought a different present, anyway.

Then Nat's grandma visits and says,

"Mary's a good part all right...Of course, it's an easy part to play, being a human and all. Much more challenging to be something that's not human. Still, I think I'd rather be a tree...God talks about trees all over the Bible...There was an important tree right in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. David and the other psalmists sang about trees showing God's power and grace. There were trees clapping their hands, dancing before the Lord Almighty!"

Later, Nat wakes in the middle of the night, determined to be the best tree she can be. When performance time comes and she's busy unexpectedly dancing and clapping all over the stage, she ends up in the nativity scene. The kids playing Mary and Joseph aren't pleased, but Nat looks down on the pretend baby Jesus and is genuinely moved. She pulls palm leaves from her costume and lays one on the baby doll and the rest all around the manger. Then everyone begins clapping. Nat thinks, "Only I clap very much louder than anybody else. On account of I am clapping for Jesus."

What I Like: Mackall understands this age group perfectly. Nat is a genuine, flawed human being, struggling with such things as covetousness, envy, and pride. She's your average sweet five year old, learning how to cope with her emotions and the people around her. My not-quite four year old adores this character.

Mackall also does a great job of making Nat's Christian life realistic: Her parents get frustrated and yell when she makes them late for church, Nat confuses various Bible stories, and Nat sometimes prays with the wrong motivation. But she also clearly loves Jesus and wants to obey him.

Lys Blakeslee supplies 22 black and white illustrations for the book, and they do a great job of making us love whimsical, befuddled Nat even more.

What I Dislike: Mackall writes the "That's Nat!" books in Nat's voice; this can make them a little difficult to read out loud - at least until you get the knack of how Nat speaks. However, this particular volume has some phrasing that is so incorrect, I find myself editing as I read aloud. I don't want my daughter to pick up Nat's poor grammar. For example, Nat talks about her "bestest friend" and "favoritest things." Nat also repeatedly uses the word "stupidhead."

Overall Rating: Although this volume isn't as good as the first "That's Nat!" book, it's still enjoyable. Given the language in the book, I struggled a bit with whether to give it a "Good" or "Very Good" rating, but because it was a big hit with my daughter, I give Natalie Really Very Much Wants to Be a Star a "Very Good" rating.

Barbara Parks Ripoff - Nearly Plagiarizm!

Dandi Daley Mackall should be ashamed of herself. She's practically plagiarized Barbara Park, ripping the core concept of a Natalie straight from the pages of Junie B. Jones. There is even an attempt at stylistic similarity, but it comes off choppy and poorly written with random interjections of classic Junie catch phrases like "That's What," and "Plus also" along with common Junie thought-bridge statements like "on account of" among others. If you don't know what I'm talking about here, go grab a Junie B. Jones book from the library. It will blow your mind how clearly Mackall is trying to sound like Park. Her writing just doesn't come close, which you might expect from someone who's stealing someone else's idea.

Excellent bible for learning readers!

This bible is the well-accepted NIV version...with a twist. It's called the NIrV ('r' for 'readers') due to taking larger words which are fine for older children and adults...and breaking them into smaller words appropriate to 5-8 year old's reading skills.

The meaning/concept has NOT been compromised.

For example...it took me several hours to figure out how to explain "according" to my 5 year old daughter (1 Cor. 15:3b - "that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures.") Granted, a dictionary would have solved this, but I was stubborn and had to figure it out on my own.

Turns out, the NIrV's wording was exactly what I came up with: 1 Cor. 15:3b - "Christ died for our sins, just as Scripture said he would."

My daughter loves being able to read the bible on her own and not having to struggle with the 'grown up words' which can be changed for easier wording.

This is not the case through-out (some words simply can not be substituted)....but it puts her at a good reading point at 5 years old!

Fantastic minus the 'r' in NIrV

This is a "big kid" Bible--complete set of scripture, leather bound, silver edged pages--the kind you'd want your kid to have for a while. Which is why we bought it for our third-grade-level 6-year-old reader. But now that we have it, we're realizing it was a mistake to get the NIrV because he's frustrated with the verses he's already memorized in church, etc, and he's not interested in memorizing any out of this Bible knowing that he'll have it "wrong" from the NIV. On the positive side, it truly is a lot easier to read, which is nice, so he reads it on his own all the time for his "free reading" time. Basically, I wish I'd just gotten a cheaper NIrV for him to have for a year or so, and then invested in the leather-bound NIV once it was THE Bible he'd have through school. Oh, and the devotionals are fantastic & age appropriate for 6 year olds or 10 year olds.

Loved this bible version. Good for my kids to understand. Much simpler understanding of words. Down fall is that came damaged don't know if it was shipped this way or if got damaged in shipping process. Kind of sucks since you're paying for a new priced bible and getting a damaged one.

This is so awesome for teen girls!

I had been looking for some time for a Bible Study to do with teen/high school girls when I ran across Head to Soul Makeover. I had actually just finished the Bible Study, Character Makeover (which Shelley Leith- author of this book- was co-author of) and absolutely loved it. I was able to read the first chapter of Head to Soul Makeover online on her website and knew this was the perfect Bible Study for my girls, ages freshman to senior in high school. It's uses popular/current reality shows to help understand 8 character qualities that we all want our teens to posses.

I had 21 girls doing this Bible Study when we did it and they really loved everything about it. The activities, quizzes, and study material were right on, current, and appropriate for the girls. There were so many different parts to the Bible study- between activities, quizzes, questions, and study material- that it tapped into all the different ways the girls learned and allowed them to feel free to open up when they were doing something they were comfortable with. While there are so many wonderful types of material & resources to use in the book, Shelley has so many suggestions and ideas that cause you to think of even more things you can do to personalize your BIble Study to your group of girls.

This Bible Study was perfect for my high school girls but I can easily see it being adapted for pre-teens and I've used it, along with Character Makeover, to do a Bible Study for college age girls. Girls of all ages enjoy shows like Biggest Loser, What Not to Wear, Amazing Race, and the other shows used in the book. Shelley does an excellent job of relating the shows concepts to the 8 Christian Characteristics of Humility, Confidence, Courage, Self-Control, Patience, Contentment, Generosity, and Perseverance. The leaders guide walks you through every step for each week. With a built-in script, weekly quizzes, interactive object lessons, questions to discuss, action steps, bonus challenges, a makeover journal, and instructions on how everything works together, you are set up for success as the leader. Even first time leaders will relax and have so much fun working through this Bible Study with the girls. We all cried when our Bible Study was completed, none of us wanted it to end. One of my girls was so impressed with the material, the ease of using the materials, and what she learned in our study, that she did Head To Soul Makeover with a group of college age girls on campus.
I cannot recommend this Bible Study enough-it is absolutely perfect for any group of pre-teen to college age girls. I promise it will be an experience that will be a blessing and wonderful learning experience for everyone involved.

A blessing in disguise

My daughter and I were preparing for a speaking engagement for teen girls and their moms. We were excited about the invitation and I was looking for a new way to reach out to our audience. I spoke with a friend who suggested I contact the author of the "Head to Soul" Makeover for Teen Girls.

My daughter has always been the "BIG" connection with the teen girls, she spoke to the issues facing the teens, our plans had me directing my words to their moms. I prayed about starting the group and decided to use the material with a group of about 15 girls. It was an amazing, unexpected blessing. It was a real surprise to see the girls partner with each other and with me on this Makeover Journey. I am a mom of two "30 somethings" and I had not been working with teens for many years. The material laid a foundation allowing the Holy Spirit to work in the lives of these young women. Every lesson led to an important challenge, giving unique ideas on building our character. The material is fun, interactive and provides the groundwork for great discussions. The discussions we experienced about fears, confidence and patience became important stepping stones to guide decisions the girls were facing. We took each activity and built relationships that are lasting. I would recommend this material, I loved the experience. The girls loved the adventure. CLC

About the Author
Virginia Kroll is the author of over fifty books for children and winner of a 2004 Children's choice award. A former elementary school teacher, she lives in New York with her husband and has raised six children of her own.

Sally Wern Comport's thoughtful, conceptual illustrations have been seen nationally for editorial, advertising and institutional clients for over fifteen years. A 1976 graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design she began her career as a Art Director at several agencies before beginning full time illustration in 1983. Since then, her work has received numerous honors including The Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, Print Magazine, How Magazine, and many Addy awards. Very Good Children's Easter Book

I purchased this book from Amazon prior to Easter along with several other titles ("The Egg Tree" by Katherine Milhouse, Brian Wildsmith's "Easter Story," "An Easter Celebration," and "Birds' Gift") to help kick-off in earnest our family library of seasonally-appropriate children's books. While I'd consider each book a welcome addition to our collection and sound choices for our children, "Easter Eggs for Anya" was the unequivocal gem of the lot.
The story is simple, but well told, the illustrations are quite good (I'm very picky about children's book illustrations and these really are nice), and the underlying message (gratitude and joy in the Resurrection of Christ at Easter) is neither heavy-handed nor watered-down.
The story is told from the perspective of Ukrainian peasants and, as a result, includes mild cultural references, in the text and in illustrations, that are uniquely Ukrainian. However, they are minor additions explained in the text and hardly off-putting to adult readers or child listeners. As the tradition of dyeing Easter eggs originates from the ancient Ukrainian practice, I would assert that this book is a welcome addition in any family that celebrates Easter, regardless of their cultural background. My mother-in-law, who hasn't a slavic bone in her body, absolutely loved the book. As does my three-year-old son (who has only a few, very small slavic bones).
The book is pro-Easter, pro-Easter eggs, pro-family, pro-Christ, pro-Christian, pro-prayer, and pro-Ukrainian.

Anya's An Inspiration

A wonderful Easter tale that incorporates prayer, thankfulness, faith, and family into the story to really focus on the Meaning of Easter!

"Easter Eggs for Anya" is a story about Anya, a poor girl from the Ukraine who wants to get eggs to decorate for Easter. She discovers four goose eggs around Easter (Pascha) after praying for them. After not having enough money to purchase the eggs, (since her father was away at war), the discovery of the eggs was a true blessing for Anya!

Pysanky eggs (Easter eggs typically dyed red and decorated with folk scenes using beeswax) are a unique Eastern European tradition, and all Anya wants to do is decorate them for her family as a surprise.

At the end of the book, there is more cultural information about Ukraine, and a few activities to do with children focusing on Easter.

Great for kids of ALL ages, and my children (two and four) sit and listened to it a lot during Lent.

Nice English book about Ukrainian Easter and Eggs

Nice English book about Ukrainian Easter and Egg (pysanky) but only gets 4-stars because there are some terms or references in the book that were just not accurate for reading to children of true Ukrainian descent who know that the references are just not correct.
