'Private Franklin Thompson, of the Second Michigan Volunteers,' you said. 'Requesting donations for the Union army, ma'am.' Great-Auntie Belle scurried around, loading my arms with linens, food, and medicines. So many questions swirled around in my head. How did you get to Michigan? And what, pray tell, possessed you to enlist in the Union army? As you carried the supplies outside to the ambulance, you whispered, 'You'll keep my secret, won't you, Mollie?' 'Such a nice young man, Mollie,' Great-Auntie commented, arms filled with more donations. 'I think I know Private Thompson,' I replied, 'from last summer at church when I visited our cousins.' 'Oh, how wonderful, dear! Why didn't you say something sooner?' She rushed outside and called you back in. 'My great-niece thinks she knows you, young man. Were you in Connecticut last summer?' 'Why, yes I was,' you replied coolly, 'I sold Bibles before I enlisted. Are you Mollie? Mollie . . . Turner?' You made it seem like we were just casual friends when I know more about you than anyone else. I followed your lead, but Private Thompson, you have some explaining to do. How clever of you to convince Great-Auntie that it would be so-o-o nice for a soldier far from home to receive the letters of a young girl---even a Confederate one. As you know from Great-Auntie's willingness to part with supplies for the Union, she makes no secret of her support for the Federal cause. Now that the Federal government has suspended mail service to the Southern states, Great-Auntie will make sure our letters get to and from Richmond through her private mail courier. Write to me soon. I will keep your secret, at least for now, but I want to know more. Your friend, Mollie Washington, D.C. June 22, 1861 Dear Mollie, I know I need to explain. I was thankful for my job selling Bibles with Mr. Hurlburt's company in Connecticut. But, when he offered me the chance to work in Flint, Michigan, I jumped at the chance to see more of this adopted country of mine. Letters of introduction from my church in Connecticut made it possible for me to stay in the home of a wonderful pastor and his family and I quickly made new friends. But, Mollie, although I always thought God called me from Canada to this country as a foreign missionary, never in a million years did I expect it might be to play a part in safeguarding these United States. One day, this spring at the train station, I heard the newsboy cry out, 'Fall of Fort Sumter---President's Proclamation---Call for 75,000 men!' It's true I'm not an American. I could return to my native land of Canada and escape all this turmoil. But when I heard the call from President Lincoln for men to fight for my adopted country, I couldn't turn away. I wanted to express my gratitude to the people of the Northern states who not only adopted me as one of their own but also proclaimed loudly the need to free the slaves. After much prayer, I knew God meant for me to enlist in the army. So when my friends all volunteered for the Second Regiment of the Michigan Volunteer Infantry, I assumed God would make a way for me to join, too. But I missed the height requirement by two inches. The day my friends left, the people of Flint gave them the grandest send-off. The boys lined up with their bright bayonets flashing in the morning sunlight. Almost every family had a father, husband, son, or brother in that band of soldiers. They told them good-bye, perhaps for years, perhaps forever. The pastor preached a sermon and presented a New Testament to each soldier. Then as the bands played the Star- Spangled Banner, the soldiers marched off to Washington. I wanted to be with them! A few weeks later, who should return to Flint but my old friend from church, William Morse, now Captain William Morse, who had come back to recruit more soldiers for Company F of the Second Michigan Regiment. This time I was ready. I stuffed my shoes with paper and stood as tall as I could. It worked! What a glorious day! I was now Private Franklin Thompson of Company F of the Second Michigan Volunteer Infantry of the United States Army. When I got to Washington, the army assigned me to be a field nurse. I reported to the surgeon-in-charge and received my first order to visit the temporary hospitals set up all over the city. Although there are no battle injuries yet, many are sick with typhoid and malaria. There are not enough beds for the sick; not enough doctors to treat them; and not enough medicines and food. That's why some of us decided to visit the good ladies of Washington and plead with them to donate to the Union. That was the day I saw you again---a most fortunate day for me. It's a Lose/Lose Situation

I honestly bought this book mostly because I have followed Lysa for years, starting with her testimony about adoption. However, this book is written for anyone that not only has a struggle with weight, but also cooks for a family or just has a general struggle with feeling guilty over something ALL the time ~ like me. I wrote that this book creates a lose/lose situation, and here is what I mean. It can encourage you through scripture to lose weight and lose guilt...but what I didn't mention in my review title is this ~ the perspective and encouragement I GAINED from this read far outweighs the benefits of what I can lose. I was honestly in tears by the third chapter. I had never really realized how much not only I eat for reward and happiness, but I also subjected my family to this. My kids do something well..."Where do you want to go to eat?" or "What special meal do you want me to make you?" is always my first question. Wow. My husband and I are both dealing with the creeping on of weight, and I turn 40 in 2 1/2 months. This book could not have been put in my hands at a better time. What a great and gracious God we have! I pray as you open the pages of this book you will not expect a quick fix diet plan, because this is not it. This is the beginning of a journey...a journey to find out who you really are in God's eyes. Why we do the things we do. And how scripture can ALWAYS point us in the right direction. Lysa's insight into scripture is very revealing and refreshing. Blessings to you as you open this amazing tool for the beginning of the rest of your life!

An interesting read

This is not your typical diet. There are no quick fixes or easy answers to be found. Instead, Lysa Terkuerst takes a different tack. She talks about craving. She states (and I agree) that we were made to crave. The problem isn't with craving itself, but rather WHAT we crave. She is also very transparent about her own struggles with excess weight and low self-esteem. She doesn't claim to have all the answers and admits she still struggles. Lysa has a lot of good things to share. I agree that when it comes to losing weight, the biggest issue isn't knowing what to do. There are countless diet books to guide you. However, I know for me, the biggest issue is the want to. I would rather have quick fix. Pop a pill or try this diet. I want the benefits of losing weight without the discipline and hard-work it takes to make that a reality. Lysa discusses that topic in depth in the book. That and her discussion of emotional eating are two of this book's biggest strengths.

I like that Lysa points out that being overweight is more than just a physical battle and issue. It's a mental, emotional, and spiritual issue as well. I think that this is an element that is missing in many diet books. Lysa will hit you where it hurts and raise issues you may not want to think about.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention a couple of problems with this book as well. The diet that Lysa used to lose the excess weight is one that is extremely restrictive. No sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, corn, or pasta. I'm just not convinced that such a restrictive diet is healthy or sustainable long-term. I believe it is possible to get portions under control without such a restrictive diet. She is quick to suggest that such a restrictive diet isn't right for everyone. But it's the only diet discussed in the book. She fails to discuss less restrictive options. I know myself too well. I would never be able to completely cut sugar and starch out of my diet. I don't think I could maintain a diet like that short-term, much less for the rest of my life.

I also found it frustrating that Lysa is very rigid and legalistic about having something she is craving, such as a sweet, a baked good, or dessert. She makes a sound like a person who is trying to lose weight should never ever, have things like that again. It seems to me like she fails to see the difference between having one brownie, once in a while, and eating the entire pan in one sitting. . She trusts God to help her overcome her cravings and temptations, so why can't she employ the same faith and trust here? In my opinion, a lot of the problem isn't in WHAT we eat, but rather in how much. Lysa doesn't even discuss eating in moderation, and I wonder why. Even so-called healthy foods can cause you to gain weight if you eat too much of them. Calories are calories.

Overall, this is a good book, and I would highly recommend it. Lysa does have a lot of good and thought-provoking things to say.

I was Made For More!

This book is such an excellent read! It's like sitting down talking to a girlfriend. I just received the book 6 days ago and I only have 3 chapters left to read for my first run through. I am so excited about what is in the book that I can't put it down and I can't read it slowly yet. My husband is wishing that he got me a bedside table lamp for Christmas because I'm up late every night reading this book. I have discovered that the book not only helps women that are struggling with food, but struggling in other areas of life as well. I have used the scriptures that Lysa highlights to help me overcome other areas in my life that I was lacking in. I have also been using the practical advice and scriptures to help my brother that is having problems in his marriage. The focus of the book helps us to realize, no matter the issue we need to crave God! It's amazing how I have seen this book help in 2 areas of my life already and in the life my brother (I didn't tell him that I got the scriptures and advice from a girlie book). My doctors have been telling me that I am overweight for 3 years now and I knew that already, but I am making preparations to meet with a nutritionist soon, because I need hard core help. I look forward to my slowed down reread of this amazing book. I thank God that Lysa is open about what a lot of us girls go through. I think this would be amazing in a small group. We don't need to do this alone and what better way then with the girls? After all, we used to go eat with the girls.

Sally Lloyd-Jones is a leading writer of inspirational books for children. A different sort of Christmas book

Written in free-flowing, poetic style, popular children's book author Sally Lloyd Jones turns the original Christmas story into something true, but different, in Song of the Stars.

"The world was about to change forever. And it almost went by unnoticed..." Jones begins. In the subsequent pages she imagines how nature might have reacted to the birth of the Savior. Leaves "rustle with a rumor," the wind "whispered it softly in the sycamore trees," a "big brown bear sniffed the air," "the skies shouted it to the seas that thundered it to the waves that roared it to the great white whales that sang it to the starfish in the deep"...and so on. Once in a while, an animal or plant cries, "It's time! It's time!," "Be glad!" "The Mighty King!", or "The Bright and Morning Star!"

The vivid illustrations by Alison Jay depict nature - presumably around the world - reacting to Jesus' birth, until finally we see Bethlehem with shepherds, sheep, and angels surrounding it, then a little barn, then a baby surrounded by animals, then the baby held by his mother and surrounded by animals, then Jesus' family. "Our Rescuer!" Mary cries, and all "gazed in wonder at God's great gift...Heaven's Son sleeping under the stars that he made."

What I Like: This picture book is unlike any Christmas book you've probably ever seen before. Jones' fresh take on the subject matter is based solidly on biblical fact, but shows plenty of imagination and creativity, too. I am reminded of Psalm 96, where the Bible says Jesus' return will be met with a roaring sea and rejoicing trees. Then would it be any wonder if nature rejoiced at his birth?

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Sally Lloyd-Jones Does it Again!

Sally Lloyd-Jones' newest book, Song of the Stars, is further evidence that she is one of the most important writers of children's books today. She is able to take the Biblical story of Christmas and, while still being faithful to the text, imagine it in a new and vibrant way. Song of the Stars is about the coming of Jesus, yes, but it is also about all of Creation waiting for him. It's about the animals and the earth longing for their Savior to come. This book should be on the shelf of every child. It's an important addition to the canon of great children's literature.

Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story

I was blessed to hear Sally Lloyd Jones read this book aloud at a conference for "creatives" : in Nashville, TN last week. She had pages from the book projected on a screen as she read (I'm guessing from the audio book version). First for the visuals - I found them to be compelling, engaging, creative and refreshingly "primitive." With children's literature the images are at least half the fun and with the artwork for this book there is MUCH fun to be had for sure. Thanks for not settling for second rate art Sally! During her keynote at the conference she said, "You wouldn't come into a presentation for your job with your second best. Why do we think it's okay for children to have less than our best. If anything kids deserve more." (I summarized that but it's close I think.) The story itself is as equally compelling. You won't be disappointed with the simple yet wonder-filled words on every page. This story is told from the vantage-point of the animals and nature that were the first to "sense" that Jesus had come to earth. They knew that "he's here" before anyone else did. What a warm and though-provoking concept. This is truly a Christmas story of a different sort. It will be a staple for my family from this Christmas forward!

About the Author
Growing up, Rick Osborne really liked Superman. Superman did what was right, he did cool things that other people couldn’t do, and he never quit. The Bible is full of great Superman-type stories where God helps good guys battle evil guys with his awesome supernatural help. By telling these stories, Rick loves to help boys see the real-life superhero that God wants each of them to be. Rick lives with his family up north in Canada, closer to where Superman built his fortress.

Ed Strauss lives in British Columbia, Canada, with his wife and three tween-aged children. Ed is a freelance writer with a passion for Biblical apologetics and fantasy fiction. Apart from writing, Ed enjoys biking and exploring nature.

Anthony Carpenter is a freelance illustrator. In addition to the four books he has illustrated for the 2:52 series, he has also illustrated many instructional books for use in school classrooms. Other projects have included coloring books, fantasy role playing game books, and art for a set of collectable cards for Marvel comics. He lives in Michigan and is currently writing and illustrating his first children’s book.

I have three pre-teen boys that all LOVE these types of books. They learn about the bible in a gross and totally BOY/MAN way which holds their interest. Love It!

Creepy Creatures and Bizarre Beasts

Another great title to peak the interest of kids to get into Word.. I use these books as referral books during my lessons for 5th and 6th graders. This one would be great to use for an evolution study. We use these books as rewards for memory work. I had them checked out thru our associate pastor and they are scriptural. I own the whole series.

About the Author
Crystal Bowman loves writing books for kids. Her books come in all shapes and sizes and many of them have become best sellers. Whether her stories are written in playful rhythm and rhyme, or short sentences for beginning readers, she tries to make them so enjoyable that kids will want to read them over and over again. "But the most important part," she says, "is to teach children that God loves them and cares about them very much."

Valerie Sokolova was born in Lvov, Ukraine. Later she moved to Minsk, Belarus, where she graduated from Belarus State Institute of Theatre and Art. She has illustrated over thirty children’s books in Russia. Valerie has also published books in the United States, including King Arthur’s Courage, The Golden Books Treasury of Christmas Joy, Thankful Together and Bella Basset Balerina. Valerie lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband Alex, daughter Nikkie and a friendly wild gecko in the basement.

Good introduction to Joshua, excellent pictures

I bought this book for my 4 year old and we've read and enjoyed it many times. The illustrations feature pencil drawings with color washes. The details in facial expressions, clothing and landscape elements such as trees and animals are outstanding. The story features simple vocabulary that is suitable for younger kids, although my 10 year old also likes to peek over our shoulders with us because the drawings are so good.

The story begins with a quick review of how Moses "helped God's people cross through the Red Sea." When Moses dies, God gives the people Joshua as their new leader.

This book allows young readers a ready introduction to Joshua 3 and 4. After reading this a few times with them, I can read the KJV with my kids and they'll have prior knowledge. I can also show them how this book is related to the Bible. For example, this book begins with the death of Moses. I can show my kids how this relates to Joshua 3:7 "And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee." And from there, the reading and study can go on and on.
