Great devotional for the family

Our family really enjoys this devotional. It is geared toward our hectic lives as it is written for 5 days a week. We do them after breakfast each morning Monday - Friday. Works out perfect for us. The stories are timely and have often spoken directly to an issue our family was dealing with or seeing around us. God is working in our lives through this book. Highly recommend it for families with 3rd graders and older.

Excellent family devotional!

Our family has been using these Walk Thru the Bible devotions for years and were happy to see them being compliled into books. Each lesson has a Bible reading, a key verse (which you can memorize as a family), an introductory illustration and a life application area. There are five devotionals per week, each week is a separate theme. Our children look forward to our nightly devotional time - and so do we! It is clearly the most age-adaptable family devotional we have found.

About the Author

Mark Matlock has been working with youth pastors, students, and parents for more than two decades. He’s the Executive director of Youth Specialties and founder of WisdomWorks Ministries and PlanetWisdom. He’s the author of several books including The Wisdom On series, Living a Life That Matters, Don’t Buy the Lie, and Raising Wise Children. Mark lives in Texas with his wife, Jade, and their two teenage children.

A terrific parenting resource

I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Mark Matlock and his publisher for sending me a copy of "Real World Parents" to review for them. I have always been grateful for this generosity, and I am trying to improve at being consistent in taking the time to thank these wonderfully giving individuals in a public forum. I really appreciate your time, effort and expense in making a reviewer copy available to me.

Mark Matlock's "Real World Parents: Christian Parenting For Families Living In The Real World" may be small, but it's an engaging workbook about developing your faith at home. Families will benefit from the frank, open discussion of various topics. Nothing is taboo - sex, teen pregnancy, suicide, etc. Each chapter wraps up with several questions that the reader asks him (or her) self to further solidify the knowledge gained in the chapter. Technical data is provided in the form of graphical charts and tables, feeding statistics into the Biblical advice given by this extraordinary youth instructor.

This is a terrific book for parents or couples planning to be parents. Read together, the material will spark conversation about how to address certain issues that parents face. This book can also be used as a springboard to broach difficult or uncomfortable subjects with your children, themselves - especially teenagers. It would also be great for teachers and others who work with children. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a child in their life.

Are you a Real World Parent?

When I found out I was pregnant a little over 12 years ago with my oldest daughter, I immediately began devouring just about every parenting book I could get my hands on! I realized that this title of "mommy" was one of the most important roles I would ever fill. So, over the past 12 years, I have read my share of books seeking advice on how to be the best mom I could possibly be.

"Real World Parents" by Mark Matlock, the founder of Wisdom Works, a non-profit organization that seeks to help teenagers accelerate biblical wisdom in their lives, stands now as ONE OF THE BEST parenting books I have read in 12 years. In his own words, Mark says this about his book:

"This is not a book about taking your kids to church, saving them from the world, or producing good behavior. Many Christian parenting books focus on helping parents figure out how to raise well-behaved, well-mannered kids. The goal of parenting, in the long run, isn't for our kids to be known for how well behaved they are, but for how well they know and respond to God."

You won't find "formulas" or "methods" in this book. What you will find is the challenge and encouragement as a parent to make sure YOU are living and walking according to God's story and not the world's story. He also stresses the importance of engaging your children in "worldview-shaping conversations" where as a mom and dad you communicate God's worldview to your children. More importantly, as you read this book you are challenged to examine what story you are telling your children, both intentionally and in the way we live with and for God over time.

I really liked the "conversational" feel of this book. As I read through the chapters, I felt as if I were having lunch with Mark and he was sharing profound biblical wisdom with me in our conversation together about parenting our kids. Throughout the book are engaging illustrations that help drive home important points and at the end of each chapter are a set of questions for you to think through before moving on to the next chapter. This feature makes this book one that would be easy to use as a small group study. Up to date statistics are used and websites are given for further study.

I'll leave you with the encouragement to read this book if you are looking for solid biblical help in your role as a mom or dad and with a couple of quotes from chapter one:

"We may wonder how God could ever look at our families and grin. And the problem is that, as parents, we sometimes forget that we're also children - that our God is our Father, and that God is more lovingly inclined to smile at us than we are to smile at our own kids."

"No matter how good or bad you believe your family is, God has plans for you that will unfold in the Real World. God will continue to move your family along in the journey he has in store for you. Which is why this book is designed to help Real World Parents understand that journey - or story - and communicate it to our kids."

About the Author
Dr. Herbert Lockyer was born in London in 1886, and held pastorates in Scotland and England for 25 years before coming to the United States in 1935. In 1937 he received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Northwestern Evangelical Seminary. In 1955 he returned to England where he lived for many years. Excellent Book!!

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to really know the men and women of the Bible. It is especially excellent for Bible students. Although the book is large, it is lightweight. The photos and other images make the book come to life. It is also a handy book for Bible study since it is a quick reference book.

Excellent source of reference

Written alphabetically, these two books combined as one, provide entries for more than 3,000 men and 400 women. Both sections of the book, for men and women, are filled with fascinating information and insights.

In the first section of the book, there is an opening chapter entitled, 'The Romantic History of Bible Names' in which for example, the function, symbolism, and influence of Bible names are discussed.

In the second chapter, after a brief introduction, names are recorded alphabetically. A meaning is given for each name, usually with a prophetic application, and is accompanied by its biblical reference(s). For some,for example, 'Coz' there are only the briefest of biographical details, while for others, for example, 'Rehoboam', fairly extensive biographical details and insights with practical applications for believers today are included.

A shorter third chapter makes reference to 'The Great Host of Unnamed Bible Men' and this is followed by the fourth chapter, 'The Greatest of All Bible men, Jesus Christ.

In the second section of the book, there is a useful introductory chapter outlining the 'Life and Lot of Bible Women, including reference to polygamy, divorce and family. Detailed exposition is then provided alphabetically in the next chapter, for each named woman from Abi to Zipporah. Examples of subsequent chapters include: 'Nameless Bible Women', Symbolic and Representative Women'and 'The Ideal Woman Among Bible Women'.

In both sections of this double book, there are useful lists and indices. I have really enjoyed dipping into different chapters but am now looking forward to following the author's suggestions for more detailed study of a Bible character.

As the teacher of our youth ministry, I find that this book is a wonderful resource for character studies. I find myself reaching for it week after week while preparing lessons and encouraging my students to use it on their own time. I have one for home and one in the classroom. Awesome!

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from the family home and studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Trouble with too much stuff

As an American family, I think we can all relate to this book. Always too much stuff. We try to purge our stuff on a regular basis, but this is a good message using King Solly-Man(Solomon) as a reference scripture. Consumerism definitely drives the "Too Much Stuff" craze, but this helps the kids see that there is more to life than stuff.

Kind of ironic

It's kind of funny to be buying a book that talks about the trouble with buying things... but it's still a good book with a good message. My daughter has the habit of asking for a toy no matter what store we are in and while I do like to be able to get her things some of the time, I want to teach her there are other gifts we have that are not purchased in a store. My daughter loves to read (and be read to) so this is a nice book to get a conversation started.

About the Author

Les Christie (DMin, Trinity International University) is a national speaker and youth ministry veteran. He chairs the youth ministry department at William Jessup University, in Rocklin, California where he has taught the Gospel of John for the last 15 years, and is also an adjunct professor at Western Seminary. Les is the author of more than a dozen books, including  Awaken Your Creativity and When Church Kids Go Bad.

David Nystrom (PhD, University of California at Davis) is Professor in Residence at Western Seminary, Sacramento Campus. He is a specialist in Roman social history and in the New Testament. Dave is the author of dozens of articles and two books, The NIV Application Commentary: James, and The History of Christianity.

About the Author

Gregg Lewis is an award-winning author and coauthor of more than fifty books, including Gifted Hands, The Ben Carson Story, Take the Risk and The Big Picture.

Deborah Shaw Lewis has authored or coauthored more than a dozen books, including Gifted Hands, The Ben Carson Story, has taught school, does professional storytelling, speaks on motherhood and family issues, and holds a master's degree in early childhood development. She and Gregg are the parents of five children.

An inspiring story about an inspiring man

You don't have to come from a privileged background to be a success in life. Ben Carson is living proof of that. Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, written by Greg and Deborah Shaw Lewis, is the story of this brilliant and renowned pediatric neurosurgeon who works at John Hopkins Hospital.

Ben was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951. When he was eight years old, his parents divorced, leaving his mother to care for Ben and his younger brother, Curtis, by herself. Their mother had to work several jobs to make enough money to provide for her small family. Times were tough and the family had to move around several times in order for them to survive.

This meant Ben and his brother had to change schools several times in their young lives. After a move to Boston, Ben and his brother went to a small, private school in Detroit, where they both did well and were ahead of most of their classmates. But, after the family moved back to Detroit, the boys discovered their previous education had been inadequate and they were behind most of the other students in their classes. This led to teasing and tormenting from them, and Ben was called the "class dummy." He almost let that defeat him.

But, he developed an interest in science, and was fascinated by rocks. He read everything he could get his hands on about the subject. When his science teacher brought in a rock, a piece of obsidian, Ben was the only student in the class who could identify it. Ben, and his teachers, discovered that Ben had a special aptitude for learning, especially when he read about something. He used his love of reading, and his special talent for learning by reading, to eventually excel in his studies, not only in grade school and high school, but also in college. Ben went on to be a neurosurgeon and has become the leader in his field.

In telling Ben's story, the author touches on the issues divorce and single-parenting, as well as racism that Ben had to deal with growing up. But, Ben was raised by a Christian mother who taught her boys the love of God and the desire to live a good Christian life. The underlying theme throughout the book was Ben's reliance on God and his belief that God wanted him to be a doctor.

What I Like: Everything. This is a truly inspiring story. Even though it was written for children, I very much enjoyed reading it. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I want to read more about this incredible man.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Great Read

This book is one that I highly recommend for an upper elementary student or higher. Dr. Carson was the only African American child in his fifth grade, and the "dumbest." His mother, who worked as a domestic, noticed that books were very prominent in the homes where she worked, rather than television. She began requiring Ben and his older brother to read two books each week from the public library and writing book reports to her. She also limited television to only certain programs each week, for a small time limit. Ben was also required by her to finally memorize the multipliction tables. His scores in math improved, and in all his school subjects. He graduated third in his class, went to Yale, and eventually became the head of Johns Hopkins Pediatric Surgery.
His mother's faith in God and his own personal faith are highlighted in his story.
Dr. Carson has written several books and is highlighted in the movie, "Gifted Hands."

Readable, appropriate, inspiring

I enjoyed reading this book. I'd already read the other biography of Carson by Lewis, and so his story was not new to me. His story is both fascinating and inspiring. I'm a reading specialist in a pubic elementary school, and I am always looking for true stories that are both appropriate and inspiring for my students to read. This is a great book that provides the story of a positive role model for kids. I would recommend it for readers of any age, but especially children.

An easy-to-read Bible story about Esther

Queen Esther Helps God's People is an easy-to-read version of the story of Queen Esther. When the King is searching for a new queen, Esther is brought to his palace by her cousin Mordecai, in hopes of her being chosen. The king is smitten with her and makes her his queen.

But, not everyone is happy about the marriage. Esther is Jewish, and Haman, one of the king's helpers, despises the Jews. He wants to get rid of Esther. So, he goes to the king and asks for his help to rid the land of the Jewish people. The king signs a law that says all the Jews must die. He doesn't realize his new queen is Jewish. Haman has tricked the king!

When Mordecai hears about this, he goes to Esther. He says, "Esther! Save God's people! Maybe that is why God made you the queen." Of course, Esther is worried the king will kill all the Jews, including herself. So, she fixes a big feast for the king and invites Haman to attend. During the meal, she confronts Haman and tells the king Haman has tricked him. The king is very angry with Haman and has him arrested. The Jewish people are saved by Esther, their new queen!

Esther 4:14 is cited as a reference for this story: "Who knows? It's possible you became queen for a time just like this."

The cartoon-like illustrations are colorful and appropriate for a book of this nature.

What I Like: I like having easy-to-read stories Bible stories for children.

What I Dislike: The story is very short and doesn't give much in the way of background as to how Esther ended up in the king's palace in the first place. That's not really a criticism, just an observation.

Overall Rating: Very good.

Age Appeal: 4-8.

This is one of my favorite Bible stories. I always love the story of Esther when I was little and still do. I brought this for our school library. We needed more books for our young students to read. We are a Christian school. This book is also AR Level and AR Quiz.
Our students were so happy for the new books so they can read them. AR reading Level 1-3 .

Love these books!

We've got about 10 of these i can read bible story books. The pictures are so colorful and the drawings are cute. My daughter points out little things I didn't even notice in the books. Very cute! The story is a classic and nicely written for young ones to understand. My daughter is only 3 1/2 and she totally gets it and loves it.

Great for young readers...a wonderful introduction to the story of Christ's resurrection

I completely love the "I Can Read" series presented by ZonderKidz. My girls always feel so accomplished when they are able to read their own books.

What appeals to me most is that even in Level 1 of the I Can Read series...there are plenty of words. Many times books aimed at the beginning reader only contain three word sentences...but the I Can Read series contains sentences that are longer but with easy to read words. Perfect.

Jesus God's Only Son is a wonderful story to share with your children. It describes in a simple, easy to read and easy to understanding structure who Jesus is and what happened to him on the days of cruixcifiction and resurrection. The illustrations are great.

This has become one of the girls' favorite books. The story line gives them plenty of food for thought which has stimulated many conversations on Christ and His resurrection. Jesus, God's Only Son is a wonderful opener to talk about Jesus with my family.

If you have ever wondered how to share the gospel of Christ's resurrection with your children this would be a great book to pick up. Since it is written in simple sentences your child (depending on their age) can read it alone or with you. A younger child would comprehend the wording and the illustrations would give him (or her) a great visual.

Great for emerging readers, but not the best faith training

This title is a Level 2 (Reading with help) book in Zonderkidz "I Can Read!" series. It begins with Jesus praying in the garden then re-tells -- with age-appropriate details --the accounts of His arrest, crucifixion, resurrection and assention.

The tone of the book focuses much on Jesus' friends: how they wanted to help Him when He carried the cross, how they cared for His body at the tomb and how happy they were to discover He was alive. The last page includes readers in this friendship by telling them that Jesus is always watching over them and that they will one day meet Him in Heaven. The illustrations by Dennis G. Jones feature a comic-like style that instantly attracts young readers. Bold lines and bright colors typify the expressive characters.

WHAT I LIKE: This book is very attractive. My kids were instantly drawn to it. As with every book in the "I Can Read!" series, this one features the perfect spacing and font size for beginning and emerging readers. The sentences are short. The text includes a combination of familiar words to build confidence and new words to expand vocabulary and reading skills.

WHAT I DISLIKE: This book leaves a lot of questions unanswered. It says "God's son Jesus was working hard" but never says what He was doing or what kind of work engaged Him. It explains that Jesus died and rose from the dead, but never explains why. It tells readers they will someday meet Jesus in Heaven, but doesn't say how or when. I wish the book offered more answers.

The illustrations clearly exhibit great skill, but the style detracts from the text. They inspire more humor than reverence. My kids were far more interested in Jesus' disproportionaly huge hands and feet than in the message behind the story. The drawing of a muscle-bound, beefcake-like angel with flowing blonde curls cracked up my kids. They thought it was hysterical! That's not exactly the desired reaction when reading about the resurrection.

OVERALL: It's okay.
