Not as good as the old version, but still a keeper
By Kathy Livingston
We originally had the old version of this Bible and loved it. The very short Bible stories, organized in sections corresponding to the divisions generally used to refer to the books in the Bible itself, each end with the statement that "God loves" whoever the story was about. The stories were well summarized with simple, clear text and the illustrations were sweet but not too sweet. All the major stories were covered, including stories from the book of Acts. The stories were short enough that we usually read an entire section in a sitting rather than one story.

When our old Bible fell into pieces, we purchased the revised version. I wish I had kept the old version for comparison purposes so I could be sure exactly what had changed, but here's what I can tell. The new version has a window for a photo of the child. It adds the statement "and God loves me" to the end of each story in addition to the end of each section as it was before. Some of the story text has been modified, in some cases to enhance accuracy; in other cases for reasons I don't understand. At least two of the sections were split into two separate sections so that the new sections are shorter. Some stories have been omitted, including all the stories from Acts. In fact, I just this week noticed that the story of Jeremiah was missing when my daughter asked about it. Each section of the old version ended with a picture of a modern child doing something, and on the facing page the statement "God loved" and a list of characters from the section "and God loves me!" The new version omits the page with the picture of the child, probably to save space. The way the pictures are printed seems more garish, although the pictures are the same.

When I buy another one of these, which I will probably do soon, I will most likely buy the old version rather than the new. Although I like the photo window and some of the textual changes, I don't like having fewer stories. I still recommend this more than any other Bible storybook for this age group that I've seen, but it is not as good as the original.

You can start much earlier than age 2. Great beginner Bible
By Deborah Hanna
This was the first children's Bible we bought for our daughter 4 years ago when she was an infant and we have yet to find one we love as much, although she has gone on to more complex versions since. But ignore the age range and don't sell your child short - we began reading to her at about 4 months of age. Babies love to be read to, and even if they don't get the whole story, the names of the characters become familiar and they get the idea of how books work. What better resource to use to start developing your child's language skills and love of learning than the Holy Bible?
We read the stories to her in their entirety and then summed it up in one sentence like, "Jacob had a dream." or "Sarah had a baby." By the time she was 18 months old, she could repeat those sentences back and give us small details like what the dream was about ("angels"). She could also identify every character by their picture by then. This is a great Bible for very young children and if you use it wisely, you can establish a hunger for God's Word early. Our daughter is now 4 1/2 and still loves Bible stories more than any others, which I believe started with this Bible when she was an infant.

Great Bible for babies through toddlers.
By Michelle Taylor
This as an awesome beginner bible. The things that I like best are that it emphasises God's love for his world and for the reader and that it works well with babies who don't have much patience for a lot of words and continues to work well as they grow older. We started with just reading the God loves part (God loved Adam and Eve, God loved Noah and his family, God loved Abraham, etc.) Then as our kids got a bit older we would look at the pictures - they are full of detail that kids love to find (see the donkey? see the birds? etc) Then more recently we have been reading the full stories. You can't beat this Bible for little ones!
