About the Author
Mona Hodgson is the author of more than twenty-two children's books. In addition to writing and speaking, Mona likes to read mysteries and love stories, hike Arizona, travel to Africa, play table games, climb rock walls, and practice hula-hooping. She lives in central Arizona where she's learning to be a real girl of the Bible.

A gentle moral

Part of Zondervan's continuing line of early readers, The Princess Twins and the Tea Party by Mona Hodgson makes great reading for all the adorable little Martha Stewart's of the world.
This "I Can Read!" Level 1 tale centers around Emma, a princess who wants everything perfect for her tea party. From her closet of pink dresses, she chooses just the right outfit. She checks in with the castle chef to ensure the cake is coming along correctly. She refolds the napkins because they don't look quite right. She shoos the kitty outside so it won't disrupt the party...then runs headlong into her sister Abby, making the name cards fly everywhere. "Now we have to make new cards," Emma cries. But her sister insists they are just fine the way they are. "Only God is perfect," she reminds Emma.
Soon, other girls arrive for the party and just as things are going along well, here comes the kitty. Emma tries to grab it...and ends up bumping into the table, spilling tea and cake everywhere. The girls giggle. No matter. They still enjoy their tea party.
What I Like: This simple story is one many girls can relate to, and it offers a gentle reminder that perfection is a fantasy. The illustrations by Meredith Johnson are cute, showing girls with lots of expression and whimsy.
What I Dislike: Nothing.

Even Princesses Aren't Perfect

The Princess Twins and the Tea Party (I Can Read! / Princess Series)The ZonderKids "I Can Read" series of books is a wonderful addition to any library. My twins were delighted to read the adventures of Princess Abby and Princess Emma.
To find a book that has twin characters, reflects the goodness of God and helps them to practice their reading skills. Wow! What an ideal scenario for my girls.
In a very simple, forthright and entertaining way Mona Hodgson shows little girls that it does not help to worry or stress over little details. Encouraging Princess Emma to enjoy their party, her sister Princess Abby clearly reminds her that only God is perfect.
The simple story line allowed my daughters and I to have a lot of opportunities to discuss what a "true Princess" really should be like. We are excited to read the rest of the "Princess Twins" stories.

Enjoy life's imperfections.

My daughter loves a good party…especially a Tea Party. She will spend hours decorating her room and setting up the “perfect party” that she sometimes forgets that it’s supposed to be fun. It worked out that we read this book just as she was in the midst of planning a spectacular “Birthday Tea Party” for her Grannie. The lesson she learned couldn’t have been more perfect for her that day!
“The Princess Twins and the Tea Party” is the story of the Princess Twins Emma and Abby. Emma wants the spring tea party to be absolutely perfect. She runs around the castle checking on the party preparations working herself up into a dither. Her sister reminds her that only God is perfect and she just needs to enjoy the party. When the guest finally arrive, disaster strikes. Will Emma still be able to enjoy the party?
“The Princess Twins and the Tea Party” is a faith based level 1 “I Can Read!” early reader with a great lesson for everyone. All too often we get caught up in “being perfect”. We miss out on so many opportunities to enjoy the people and things around us because things just aren’t perfect. My daughter has missed out on playdates with her friends, because I felt the house wasn’t clean enough. My daughter almost missed out enjoying her party because her brother spilled water on the napkins and she felt her table was no longer perfect. In life rarely do things go according to plan and just like Emma we need to be reminded that only God is perfect. We need to learn to step aside and enjoy life…imperfections and all.
When the party was “ruined” I love how Abby took a bad situation and turned it around. Emma learned that even when things take a turn for the worst, something good can be found in the situation. The girls and their friends were able to laugh at themselves and enjoy the day even though it didn’t go as planned.
The book is based on Proverbs 3: 34 – “He [God] gives grace to those who are no proud”. My daughter and I talked about how God will give us the grace to find the good in the “bad” things that happen around us. She discovered that when she lost her homework and had to redo it, she had extra time to practice. When she sprained her foot and had to stay indoors at recess, she made a new friend who was also staying indoors.
“The Princess Twins and the Tea Party” has short simple sentences that is perfect for young readers. The book has a fun story line that is well told. The illustrations are fun and capture the excitement of the day perfectly. We both enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read other books in this series.
