Altar Ego Study Guide and DVD

I am using the Study Guide and DVD for a Bible Study class of women that I teach at our church. This is the third study I have used by Craig Groeschel and the women are loving each session. Graig has such a winning way of explaining each subject that he covers. We have gotten a lot of laughs out of his stories of his experiences. He brings a human aspect to what we all go through in our lives.

Craig Groeschel is an ordinary man and he shares his mistakes, his embarrassments and poor choices in judgement. Most of all he shares how he has learned to live with gratitude and to be who God says he is with integrity and purpose. He is also a man who treasures his family. I highly recommend Altar Ego.

It is extremely difficult to find "Red Letter" editions of the Bible today...especially in a children's Bible. This one was one of the few I could find. I wish it had a better Concordance in the back, but it is a nice starter Bible for a 9 year old. Nice size book and print.

Another great bilingual bible story.

This is the second book that we purchased for our bilingual religious education class. These have been great for our English/Spanish speaking students with Spanish parents. The teacher is mildly fluent in Spanish, but with the bilingual pages, she is able to teach a story with a Spanish speaking parent-assistant. WONDERFUL material to get the story out in both languages.

The pictures are colorful and interesting without looking babyish or too cartoonish. Looking forward to reading more of these books.

Nice Bible for young children

This is a nicely sized Bible, with illustrations and maps to pique the interest of your child. It is not, however, a simplified or abridged version of the Bible, which is helpful, as I want my daughters to hear the full, beautiful language and structure of the Scriptures. I liked the Kindle format, which displays the somewhat enlarged text in a single-column format across each page, rather than the conventional small text in a two-column format. This seems a little less intimidating for a young reader. I was disappointed that the print Bible used the conventional format. However, it would probably make a much more cumbersome Bible.

I purchased this book for my classroom. We were discussing a story that referred to Adam's fall. One of my students asked who Adam was. I knew that I needed to have a Bible in my classroom for a resource for my students. It has been read since being brought into the classroom. They love the illustrations and text.

Great Introduction to the Series

Mixed Bags is the first book in Melody's Carlson's new teen fiction series featuring the Carter House girls.

Katherine Carter, an internationally famous, 60's fashion model started Carter House Boarding School with the hopes to instill fashion sense, culture, etiquette and poise in her young charges, especially in her granddaughter Desiree. But Desiree Jeannette, a.k.a. D.J. wants nothing of it, after all she's an athlete. She'd rather throw a ball than dance at one.

As the other girls begin to move in, D.J. realizes that her grandmother may have more than she bargained for with these girls. There's Taylor, the manipulative, double-talking, fashion plate who sets her sights on making D. J.'s life miserable; Kriti, the exotic overachiever who has fashion sensibilities but seeks academics as her means to success; Eliza, the well-to-do Southern beauty; Rhiannon, the new Christian, whose drug-addicted mother used to be a Carter House housekeeper, and Cassie, the loner who finds it easier to act out and do wrong as doing the right thing may have harmful consequences.

When all these young ladies mix their emotional baggage together, tempers and jealousies flair and some friendships are forged. Melody Carlson has set the stage for a lot to happen at The Carter House: from the grandmother's obsession with appearances to the girls triumphs and challenges of coming of age.

I couldn't totally identify with the fashion references from this story because I never put much emphasis on labels, but I can identify with the D.J.'s struggle to find herself. I remember being a teen! I look forward to reading how the girl's different personalities force D.J. to question who she really wants to be.

Terrific YA Christian book with real girls with real problems

Mixed Bags by Melody Carlson is the first book in the Carter House Girls series. DJ's grandmother, a former supermodel, has opened up her large Victorian home to five other girls in hopes of turning them all into debutantes. DJ is au naturel: no make-up, hair tucked up in a baseball cap, and completely ignorant of designer labels. So sharing her home and even room with girls who look like they stepped off of the pages of Vogue does a number on her self-esteem. Taylor and Eliza and beautifully dressed and self-assured. Kriti is a lovely Indian girl who wants to go far academically. Rhiannon and Casey are Grandma Carter's charity cases. Rhiannon has come to faith in spite of her mother's drug addiction. Casey's parents believe she's in need of an intervention with the safety pins through her eyebrows and Goth style make-up. Throwing all of these girls into one house ensures plenty of drama and clashing personalities. I am thoroughly impressed with Zondervan's willingness to attack real teenage issues head on. Some of these girls are sexually active, one smokes, some drink; these are not your stereotypical Christian fiction teens. They break the rules and each other without a second thought. But Carlson gives each girl a real personality with quirks and failings. We see events primarily though DJ's eyes, and she struggles with figuring out who she is and want she really wants, just like every other real world teen. This promising introduction to the series definitely leaves the reader wanting more.

Melody Carlson has done better

I have read many books by Melody Carlson from the True Colors, Diary of a Teenage Girl, and Samantha McGregor series and I loved them all. However this book was a disappointment. The plot is rather weak; DJ's decision to become a Christian comes almost completely out of the blue without the period exploration Carlson's other characters go through. Despite this I did feel some connection to the characters and I finished the book in one sitting, so it held my attention. I would recommend this book for younger teens and as a clean alternative to the many similar books filling bookstore shelves nowadays.

another good publication.

Again, I love this line of books - "I Can Read" books. They are reading level obtainable and are simple enough to be understood at the level your reading child is. The pictures are colorful and words understandable. I use them in a mixed age beginning Sunday School class. The children really like to see them.

BIG TIME continuing purchase

2 of 4 grands are 5 and 6 and joined at hip; alas one is somewhat slow which younger is THE BOSS. They love all things Princess and now Dr Seuss and stories I tell from times once before once upon a time. They love Bible stories and want to read all the time. THIS does it for them BIG TIME. Buying more for them.

Similar to Early Forbidden Doors Series

In book 2, The Enemy Closes In, we find the three siblings on the run in an RV.

Piper, the sister, ends up working in a diner to pay for RV repairs; Zach meets a mysterious girl who is part of a society dealing with dark forces.

The three villains seem more like the comic relief in this follow-up story as Shadow Man uses the leader of the society, Jason, to capture Elijah.

Meanwhile, the parents are working on escaping from Shadow Man's lair.

This second book seemed a lot like Myer's earlier work called The Forbidden Door series which also dealt with dark spiritual warfare stuff.

Outside of the villains seeming too goofy and leaving the menancing for Shadow Man, this series is turning out to be a decent weekend read.

Spiritual Warfare At A Childs Level

Book Two:

I have to give the authors some credit. Although the series has been playing out like a made-for-TV kids movie in it's presentation the power of God over evil has been very uplifting. I'm reading this to my six year old and he absolutely loves it. He can't wait until night to have it read to him. (Note: he could read it himself but some things need to be discussed.)

The story continues where we left off and we find the three kids in a search for their kidnapped parents while they are being chased but some bad characters. A separate evil arrives in the form of a spiritual leader named Jason that lives next to the garage where the kids stay while having the RV repaired. The kids are being attached on all sides however God is with them and so is a very helpful angel in the form of an old man that keeps showing up at the right time.

This series is definitely not for older teens, young adults or adults. It's has goofy and comical stuff mixed in with the adventure and danger. Not the kind of comedy that adults would find funny. I also think all four books could easily fit into one volume which would save the reader quite a bit of money.

Love these talksheets !

I have used one of his earlier Talksheet books with my middle school Sunday School class, so when I saw this one was available, I bought it. I really like them and the kids seem to, too. The worksheets keep them engaged. They give good topics for discussion as they learn more about the Bible story and the life lesson to go along with it. It makes the lesson easy to prepare, and very easy for a substitute to use on short notice.

As with other talk sheets this product provides a readily available lesson for Junior High youth that they really connect to even if Middle School kids don't really connect to you.
