Great for kids

My 11 year old son loves the series. Sure it's fun but he has actually learn a great deal of the Bible with the mangaBible series. I got him Vol 1 for Christmas and would not stop about when I was going to get him the next one. These days kids LOVE this kind of art as it is on all the animated series. The only bad thing I can say is that I wish they were in color but my son doesn't mind at all.

This particular series is perfect for its recommended age group. My son can't put them down, and they are books- Bible no less. Very low tech, but perfect for the 9-12 crowd. It's hip enough to share with friends, yet book enough to please adults. We have enjoyed all books released so far from this series.

Looking at the Bible with new eyes

I was first introduced to graphic novels when I was working in our local school district. They seem to be the latest, greatest trend in young adult literature.

I recently had an opportunity to check out "Fights, Flights, and the Chosen Ones," which is a combination of the Biblical books 1st and 2nd Samuel. For those not familiar with graphic novels, they are essentially stories in comic book form - most have a distinctive anime style.

I enjoyed reading this book in the MangaBible series. I think the action, battles, and adventures in this particular book will appeal largely to boys. Now just so you know, this is not a "Bible." It's a retelling of the stories of the Bible in comic book form. It is, however, accurate to the Biblical narrative. The illustrations do a great job of communicating the stories.

I think a child or teen could easily sit down and read through the entire book. I love that it makes learning about the Bible new and entertaining. Even though I was already familiar with the stories, I enjoyed rediscovering them in this new format.

Excellent novel, highly recommended

"Boyfriends, Burritos & An Ocean of Trouble" is a young adult novel with some romance that also deals with serious, real life teen issues. I loved it. I very highly recommend it to teen girls and adult women. This is the second book in the "Real Life" series, but you can read them in any order without missing information or spoiling the other books in the series.

The world-building was excellent in all areas and brought the story alive in my imagination. I liked the characters. They acted realistically and dealt with realistic, hard problems. I really cared about what happened to Bryn and the other main characters, so I had a hard time putting the novel down. The suspense/tension kept building throughout the story as the situation kept getting worse and worse. Despite the tough issues, the book was realistic but encouraging rather than depressing.

This was definitely a novel intended for Christians. Bryn found a strange, "RL" book with stories from the Bible about Jesus but they seemed written just for her and the situation she's going through. The Christian element was a main part of the story, but I didn't feel like the author was lecturing the reader or Bryn. It was just...comforting and challenging.

The minimal bad language was of the "he said a five letter word" type. There was no sex. Overall, I highly recommend this as a touching, well-written, clean novel.

Real Life -- it can include some not-so-nice things too.

The strange book mentioned in the title is the RL (Real Life) book that each girl reads while dealing with her real-life issues (as opposed to a fantasy adventure or historical fiction). This series provides a wholesome alternative to other series in popular literature, contemporary teen fiction.

In Boyfriends, Burritos& an Ocean of Trouble (Real Life), Bryn has been good at keeping secrets, even about her boyfriend's abusive behavior. When a car accident reveals the truth and unleashes trouble, her friends don't believe her, and her world unravels.

Her athlete boyfriend and friends blame her for the accident. When she decides to tell the truth and press charges, she is alienated by them. Her grandmother arrives to help her live through the process of going to court, and teaches her how to surf and make Mexican cuisine. She learns that telling the truth has a price as she faces name calling, threats, and more.

Like Jessie, she also finds a mysterious RL book that could hold the secret to riding out the tidal wave her life has become since the car accident. Through it, she learns about Yeshua, the main character, and the book seems to meet her where she is at, emotionally and spiritually.

This book can be easily read by students 5th grade and up. It's not a heavy book that promises false hope, but one that shows how a real girl faces her personal demons and tries to search for spiritual significance. In the next book Boyfriends, Burritos& an Ocean of Trouble (Real Life)), it is an abusive relationship and what happens when you stand up for the truth. In the first book, Motorcycles, Sushi& One Strange Book (Real Life), it is dealing with ADHD and a dysfunctional family.

5 stars for an excellent read -- can't wait to read the 3rd book, coming out in the fall! I'm passing my copy on to a middle school friend.

Stuff Teens Need to Read About

Nancy Rue's YA books are like a breath of fresh air in Christian young adult fiction. While there are several good CF YA authors already in place, her stories are not just fluff and romance. She takes serious subjects and puts it in a teen's perspective with situations and answering questions that no one else pays attention to.

This book does not shy away from realistic issues that teens face. I'm sure that there are probably some parents who will think that this book is too mature for their teens and while it is their right, I believe that learning about how to handle this kind of situation will benefit teens. Bryn has found herself in an abusive relationship with almost no one to turn to. Many teen girls are either in this kind of relationship currently or have had abusive boyfriend in the past but never told a single person. The story shows the helplessness, fear and shame that comes with being in this situation. The behavior that she has to put up with is unbearable and even though I don't condone physical abuse from both sides, I really wanted this guy to feel the same pain and agony that he put on Bryn.However, there is some hope for Bryn as she finds this in her new relationship with her grandmother, the new guy she meets, and surfing.

I was particularly excited that parts of the book took place in my hometown area of Virginia Beach. I love seeing places I know show up in books so it was a very nice surprise and Rue portrayed our area very nicely. And kudos for mentioning burritos!

Some might complain that this book is preachy due to the Christian overtones found in the overall story and in the book that Bryn finds. However, I am going to have to disagree with this. Yes, I read a lot of Christian books and am a practicing member of the faith. BUT for a young adult fiction book, this story features so much more than just religion. Bryn is obviously going through A LOT of emotions and is involved in a dangerous situation with no one to turn to and almost no help in sight. It's her choice to turn to her faith to put her trust in and the way that Rue handles it is not at all in your face or proselytizing type of way. Pretty much all I can say is a quote from 12 step programs: "Take what you like and leave the rest." Because what Rue says in this book is something that a lot of teen girls need to hear but no one ever tells them and you can choose what you want out of this book. HIGHLY recommended.

About the Author

Paul Tautges serves as senior pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. Previously, he served as pastor of Immanuel Bible Church in Sheboygan, Wisconsin for 22 years. Paul has authored eight books and is a teaching fellow for the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC). He and his wife, Karen, are the parents of ten children. Paul blogs regularly at Counseling One Another.

 

Bryce Butler is the Founder & Managing Director of Access Ventures, an impact investment group that deploys holistic investments to see communities flourish. Previously, Bryce was the Executive Pastor of Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and served in the United States Army. He has an M.A. in Theology from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a B.S. in Economics from Iowa State University. Bryce is married to Bethany, and they have 3 children.

This book argues against the practice of euthanasia from a decidedly Christian point of view. Tada bases her arguments on the implication that euthanasia is the "ultimate expression of selfishness" and that persons entertaining such thoughts are being tempted by the forces of evil. While Tada is undeniably self-righteous in tone, readers should note that she writes with personal authority, having been paralyzed in a diving accident in her teens. Libraries seeking to balance their euthanasia collections should consider this for purchase, along with Robert Wennberg's similarly argued Terminal Choices ( LJ 11/15/89). For the opposite point of view, libraries should consider Derek Humphry's The Right To Die ( LJ 9/1/86). An inspiring, valuable and helpful book!

This book can be especially helpful to parents with a handicapped child. Joni Eareckson Tada, well known author and speaker, suffered a permanent spinal injury in a diving accident when she was in her teens. This book, written more than two decades later, addresses the difficult topics of suicide and euthanasia, suffering and mercy. The book is divided into three sections. Part 1. A Time to Live, Part 2. A Time to Choose, and Part 3. A Time to Die. Joni’s story and experiences run through out the book along with stories about others who are handicapped or dying. She offers practical and specific information and help for those who are depressed, considering suicide; those who want to die.

She speaks from her Christian faith with a strong belief in God and notes that there is “an intelligence behind moral evil.” He’s the devil. He was called the tempter by Jesus. There is no truth in him and his goal is death. Pg.97. The devil tells us all kinds of lies – “No one cares.” “There’s nothing more to expect from life.” “I can’t live with this depression.” And the biggest life of all, “Nothing awaits me after death.”

This book published in 1992 continues to help people with handicaps, people with depression and those who are nearing death. There is excellent information in here from a Christian perspective. Joni’s life is a testimony in itself to the fact that every life has a God given purpose.

Rich Book on Suffering, Euthanasia, Suicide, Faith

Of course this person has right to speak on these subjects and the rest of us to listen. However, she does it with great grace and humility and faith, which makes it an important book.
Sad to see it out of print, and this has many important things to say on these vital topics. Her strong quotation from the Bible makes it difficult to sidestep these issues.
Her advocacy with these sensitive issues makes this read even more relevant and touching.

I purchased several from this series for my 6 year old and 4 year old. They love the pictures and information about the animals and I love that each book starts and ends with a comment about God and his creation. Would love to see this series expanded to geography and space!

Great book for elementary girls

After starting to read the first book in the series to my 8 year old daughter, she fell in love with the books and although it was a bit above her reading level she finished the book by herself. I bought her the next two books in the series for her to read, including this one, and she loved them! Great clean message in them with a dose of reality of the real life struggles one can go through due to the good/bad choices that are made. I will definitely be getting the rest of the series for her!

This was one of the best books I'v read. And trust me I have read a lot of books. This book clearly deserves a 5 star rating. I would recommend this book to most girls and women and to some boys and men. WARNING the end of the book may make you cry.

Mounce offers a new, inductive approach to learning Biblical Greek that actually makes learning Biblical Greek exciting and fun! The student will no longer have to rely on mere rote memorization to "learn" Greek. Mounce explains why some Greek words do what they do when they change tenses/cases. Even the most diffcult of forms become sensible. Thank you Dr. Mounce for making learning Greek enjoyable. PS: If you're beyond the basics of Biblical Greek but wish to dig a little deeper, check out Mounce's Graded Reader of Biblical Greek and Morphology of Biblical Greek. Also part of the Series is Daniel Wallace's monumental work, Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics. Amazon.com has them. You need them.

The simplest approach for the do-it-yourself learner

This book takes you straight to the New Testament with plenty of practical encouragement. The author provides a simple approach to the difficulties of Greek grammar. Taken with the workbook, this book can take you through all the basics of two semesters of seminary Greek.

I am attempting to teach myself New Testament Greek. This text offers the benefits of a lecturing professor and his wisdom. William D. Mounce shares his a wealth of knowledge in an interesting manner along side of the basic facts of the NT Greek language. I am enjoying this book.

Great book but not new. Republsh under another name

Replublish of older book on Innovation. I really dislike the fact that you actually have to buy a book, or phisically have certain books on hand to see the fineprint that these were previoysly released under another title. I find that to be very misleading. If youre going to republish a book, fine. But if you are going to republish a book with the exact same content, and then change the name only, to me is nothing less than misleading and gimmicky.

In Larry Osborne’s new book Sticky Leaders Osborne provides a wealth of knowledge and wisdom in navigating innovative leadership. While reading through this book I was reminded of lessons I have been learning from other authors and books I have read this year. Osborne found a way to encapsulate key learning and understanding from books I have read such as Team Genius, That’s Not How We Do it Here, Originals, the Fifth Discipline, Good to Great, and more. You would have to read at least 5 other books to gather the collective wisdom presented in this one book. If you have time to read only one book on leadership that breaks out of the traditions of the past, this is the one I would recommend. This book is much more than a book on innovation alone. In it you will learn a ton of helpful principles such as:

-Why your biggest problems may be your greatest blessing
-How to recognize a serial innovator
-Why an exit strategy for innovation is more important than the game-plan
-How clarity accelerates innovation
-Why you shouldn’t rely on polls and surveys when seeking to be innovative, why the first to the market with a new idea does not have an advantage
-Why learning outside your “tribe” is essential to innovation
-Why compassion and authenticity matter more than excellence
-The damage groupthink can take on innovation
-Why inviting too many people into the decision making process is damaging
