Good. . .but not quite what I expected. . .

Having read the entire series of the Montclair Brides (all of which I thought were wonderful books) I was really looking forward to reading the last one. I have to say that I have rather mixed feelings about Montclair Homecoming. In some ways, it's an enjoyable story, even though you don't get into Joy's Montclair connection until quite a ways into the book. Joy's growing relationships with Evan, Gayle and the others in the hospital are told in a warm, sensitive way. But as a conclusion to the Brides of Montclair series, it is somewhat dissappointing.
For one thing, alot of the things about the Montrose/Cameron family tree seem out of proportion. Jane Peart is usually very careful about the families' relationships in her previous books, but in this one, she made some obvious errors. For example, Joy says that Jeff Montrose is her great-grandfather, but she is actually Johnathan's descendent. I also have a hard time believing that after only thirty-five years after Courageous Bride left off, EVERYONE in the previous few books are dead, or seem to be, since they are all only mere mentions in Montclair Homecoming. Joy never contacts, or is contacted, by any of them. Even people who wouldn't seem to be that old, like Gareth's daughter, Hope, and Cara-Lyn, Lynette's daughter, have simply seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth. No mention is even made whether or not these people have been contacted about inheriting Montclair. Perhaps if the book's date -- 1980 --had been moved up about 20 or 30 years, it might have been just a little bit more realistic. 35 years just seems a little bit too short a time period for everyone to have died off. It would have been nice for Joy to know that she wasn't all alone in the world as far as blood relatives went.
The decision to give Montclair to the Historical Society was a good way to end the series, however; otherwise, the Brides of Montclair might have gone on forever. This book is best looked at as an individual story (which I believe the plot would have been best suited for). This is an OK book, but I think the series should have left off with Courageous Bride, which somehow seemed a more fitting conclusion than Montclair Homecoming.

A Somewhat Dull Conclusion

I have read the entire series and have been looking forward to this book. It was O.K. but not Peart's best work. I was confused by what happened after 1945. There is a lot of revisiting of the old brides but I couldn't keep the family tree straight. I don't understand how Johnathan Montrose could be Joy's great-grandfather and Jeffrey her great-great grandfather when they were stepbrothers. I really didn't like Joy to much, either. She seemed a bit immature and flighty. Evan was too old for her, and I didn't care if they got together. The ending was abrupt and didn't mention the past like I wish it would have. Did any of the books ever mention Kip and Cara's hidden note about getting married! I thought they would this time, but they blew over it. Anyway, it was a conclusion.

too many gaps between 14 and 15

I have to agree with the other reviewers that some of the dates and Joy's ancestors just don't fit. Peart did put a family tree in the back of this book, as I have been asking, but it is very slender and not comprehensive at all. However, when I finally quit reading to see if everything "fit" with the previous fourteen in the series, I really enjoyed the story. The characters of Joy, Gayle, and Dr. Wallace were thoughtfully rendered, and the initial concept, Joy's mural, does become a sort of ministry for her. Joy's journey to Montclair and her discovery of Rose's journal was riveting, and Gayle's acceptance of her slave ancestors was touching and thought-provoking. If the book is read singly, you will find it a heart-warming and enjoyable story. However, as a conclusion to such a wonderful series, I was left empty and disappointed that Montclair is now out of the family and that there are almost no Montrose/Cameron ancestors left.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from the family home and studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Great Easter Story

I was looking for a book to explain Easter to my 4 and 5 year old. They have had very little time in the church but I wanted them to know why we really celebrate Easter. This book was perfect. It starts out talking about Easter eggs and candy but then explains the real story about Easter. It was not too complicated for my kids to understand but yet did a thorough explanation. This is a great buy for those who are christian but are unable to take their children to church.

Perfect for my 3 year old

Easter isn't about candy and my kid didn't buy it when I was telling him this- but the good ol' Bernstein Bears taught him that Easter is about the fact that JESUS IS ALIVE. When I was trying to explain it myself, I was focusing too much on the death and crucifixion. This book helps young kids focus on the resurrection- what Easter is truly about. I'd repurchase this book 100 times over. We read it every morning and every night just before bed.

Nice Easter Book with true meaning

I got this for my 2 year old for his Easter basket this year. He enjoys the Berenstain Bears, so I was happy to see a book that touched on the true meaning of Easter. It follows the bear cubs through a play that explains what Easter is all about. The message will be a bit above my 2 yr's old head for a few years, but I foresee us reading this one for years to come!

Stanley N. Gundry is executive vice president and editor-in-chief for the Zondervan Corporation. He has been an influential figure in the Evangelical Theological Society, serving as president of ETS and on its executive committee, and is adjunct professor of Historical Theology at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. He is the author of seven books and has written many articles appearing in popular and academic periodicals.

John H. Armstrong is president of ACT 3 in Carol Stream, Illinois and served as a pastor for more than twenty years. He is an adjunct professor of evangelism at Wheaton College Graduate School. Dennis Jowers is associate professor of Theology and Apologetics at Faith Evangelical Seminary in Tacoma, Washington.

Jonathan Lunde (PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is associate professor of biblical and theological studies at Talbot School of Theology of Biola University. Dr. Gary T. Meadors (ThD, Grace Theological Seminary) was professor of Greek and New Testament at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. He is author of Decision Making God’s Way and a contributor to the Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology. Dr. Meadors and his wife, Gloria Jean, have been married since 1967 and reside in Ft. Myers, Florida.

About the Author

L. B. Cowman worked as a pioneer missionary with her husband in Japan and China from 1901 to 1917, during which time they helped found the Oriental Missionary Society. When Mr. Cowman's poor health forced the couple to return to the United States, Mrs. Cowman turned her attention to caring for her husband until his death six years later. Out of Mrs. Cowman's experiences and heartbreak came her first book, Streams in the Desert, followed by its companion Springs in the Valley. During the next twenty-five years, Mrs. Cowman inspired several nationwide Scripture distribution campaigns and wrote seven more books. Finally, on Easter Sunday in 1960, at the age of ninety, Mrs. Cowman met face-to-face the God she had served so faithfully for nearly a century.

One of my favorite passages from this beloved-by-many devotional tome is on the date February 4 and is about flying into the wind, to overcome its power. The devotional ends with a little poem paraphrased from Victor Hugo: "Be like a bird that, halting in its flight, Rests on a bough too slight. And feeling it give way beneath him sings, Knowing he hath wings."

This devotional book is well-known and has been around for decades. It has been quoted and/or paraphrased in other publications that share spirituality through strength, hope and experience. At first glance, the stories may seem old-fashioned and too long. I suggest reading some of the longer pages as literature then give yourself a moment to pause. During that important pause, you will more likely than not experience an unforgettable "Aha!" moment.

Berenstain's "God Loves You!"

Very nice story. It's a little wordy for the younger ones, but still interesting.

Brother and Sister are disappointed because they don't make the basketball team and the school play, respectively. (They're chosen to be the team and stage managers instead.) They feel very disappointed and unappreciated. Mama, with some clumsy "help" from Papa, lol, is able to explain that God loves us no matter what, and that Brother's and Sister's teachers must have a lot of confidence in the cubs, to have given them jobs that require so much responsibility. It's a story almost everyone can relate to, and it would encourage youngsters (or their parents) who are in similar situations.

The Bernstain Bear books are classics. I have read them to my children and grandchildren and they have loved them also. This book is no exception.

perfect even if you don't read often

Ive had this bible over a year now and love it! Ill be the first to tell you taking the time to read the bible is not my strong suit, but the wonderfudl index allows you to look up almost any word (love, hate, depression, hand, etc) and lays out what verses and passages are about it. The text is very simple and straight forward and its a great pick me up or to give god praise. Im gonna buy my best friend a copy for xmas :)

Updated NIV Study Bible is a big improvement & delight to read

This review is for the hardcover edition of the NIV Study Bible 2011 in book form (not Kindle).

One thing to notice right from the start is that this new study Bible is called "NIV Study Bible" and not "Zondervan NIV Study Bible".

Initially I was reluctant to purchase another updated NIV Study Bible (since I've had several improved versions already of the NIV Study Bible); However, when I opened this updated edition and began reading it, I recognized right away that there were significant improvements.

A. The NIV text is revised -- this Study Bible uses the updated 2011 text rather than the 1984 NIV text. The main difference in the updated 2011 text is use of more gender inclusive language ("brothers and sisters" instead of brethren), and significant differences in translation than the 1984 NIV version.

Here are some of the significant changes:

1) Psalm 23: 4: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil ..." (2011 version); the older version (1984) reads "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."

2) In Genesis 1:6 the 1984 version says, "And God said, 'let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water"; in the 2011 version, Gen. 1:6 says, "Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water."

3) Rom. 1:16: The 1984 version leaves out the conjunction "For" in the beginning: "I am not ashamed of the gospel .." The 2011 version correctly adds "For" in the beginning: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel.."

4) Rom. 8:5 The 1984 version translates the Greek word "sarx" as "sinful nature": "Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." The 2011 version is much improved: "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance to the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." The 2011 translation "flesh" is much more accurate and closer to the original. I had a very difficult time accepting the 1984 translation "sinful nature" -- it is a mistranslation of "sarx," which should be translated as "flesh" (cf. ESV, NASB, NRSV)

5) Phil. 2:6 (2011): "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage" (1984 version says " .. consider equality with God as something to be grasped.").

6) 1 Cor. 7:1 (2011): "Now for the matters you wrote about: 'It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman'"; the 1984 version says "It is good for a man not to marry."

While I preferred Gen. 1:6 and Psalm 23:4 in the 1984 version, I liked the significant changes in the NIV (2011) as listed above. To its credit, this 2011 NIV text still retains the Messianic title "Son of Man" in Daniel 7:13; it did not go the way of the NRSV and translate it as "someone like a human being."

One thing that teachers using the 2011 NIV text need to know is that it reads differently from the NIV 1984 version. When I read from the NIV 2011 to my Sunday School students, they asked me, "Which Bible are you reading from?" Many of them had the 1984 NIV and the new 2011 version had different wording.

B. New updated features, charts and articles

1) There are colored introductions to each Bible book; colored illustrations, maps, and charts. These colored illustrations make this updated version much more appealing to read

2) Slightly updated notes -- the notes are very similar to the 2008 updated Zondervan NIV Study Bible. Some of the notes include a brief explanation of the Jewish understanding of biblical concepts (e.g. the notes to the Prologue of John in John 1:1-18).

3) New helpful colored charts and articles

Ancient Texts Relating to the Old Testament (all the Ancient Near Eastern Texts that are important for understanding the Old Testament)

In the Old Testament, there are explanatory articles and charts that explain key cities (e.g. the City of the Jebusites, Solomon's Jerusalem)

Explanatory articles on the Tabernacle, Tabernacle Furnishings, Old Testament Festivals, Old Testament Sacrifices, etc.)

Explanatory articles (and maps) on Important OT events (The Exodus, David's Conquests, Wilderness Wanderings, Division of the Land in Joshua's Conquests, etc)

In the prophetic books, there are charts like "Visions in Daniel" that explain and compare the vision of the statue (ch. 2) and the four kingdoms (ch. 7) in Daniel

Major Archaeological Finds for the NT (right after John chapter 21)

Colored Harmony of the Gospels

Charts that Summarize Christ's Life and Ministry (Jesus' Early Life, Jesus' Baptism and Temptation; Summary Charts on Christ's Life from Childhood, Baptism, Ministry, Last Week, and Resurrection -- (all within the "Matthew" section in the New Testament)

All the maps inside the text are in color (e.g. Paul's Missionary Journeys in the Book of Acts; Seven Churches in Asia Minor in Revelation)

Colored pictures and descriptions of important archaeological sites (e.g. Herod's Temple, Roman Colosseum, Jewish ritual bath, Temple of Trajan, etc.)

What I found most helpful was the Topical Index, which helps the reader find the right Scripture passage for a given topic. It was helpful that the concordance followed right after the Topical Index.

The colored maps are excellent in the back.

5) Suggestions for Future Editions

I hope someday the NIV Study Bible would include a Brief Survey of Biblical Theology, a brief overview of church history, and articles on key words in the Bible. Study Bibles such as the Ryrie Study Bible, MacArthur's Study Bible, and the ESV Study Bible include these helpful articles.

However, the new NIV Study Bible is a pleasure and delight to read. I'm so glad the editors included the colored charts, articles, and maps within the text of the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Good content, but very disappointed by the layout

First of, the content is amazing.. commentaries, maps, etc... exactly what I wished for.

Unfortunately, the layout (in Kindle) is disappointing. There is no index to go to a specific chapter or verse. To do that I would need to go way back to the table of contents. It's difficult clicking the commentaries (I was hoping it would show below similar to magazines or my annotations). To go to the maps if would take several clicks and by that time, it would be difficult to return to the verse I came from.

In summary, the content is really good and for a straightforward read of the Bible, functional. But if you would like to really study the Bible or use this for a study, it's really difficult.

UPDATE: After using the study Bible even more.. I now love it! The content is really good.. full of commentaries and even pictures. Navigation is not perfect, but it just takes getting used to. What I would do is to read the chapter, go back to v1 and read the commentaries for the rest of the chapter. I am now at Leviticus and what was a difficult and boring read for me, now is much more meaningful and insightful. It's nice to have all that info anywhere.

Beautiful study Bible with helpful notes and articles

First, let's deal with a few of the other reviewers' complaints. Some of them are just not legitimate.

This is a STUDY Bible, all right? Study Bibles are too big and heavy to carry to church. They're for study, at home. If you want a Bible for church, buy a slimline or pew Bible, but don't complain about how big and heavy this is. Read the weight before you buy and the number of pages.

Now for the margins. The side margins are a half inch and the top and bottom about 3/8 inch in the large print version. If you think these are two narrow (as some reviewers seem to), it's because this is a large print Bible and they're trying to make it thinner. Wider margins would have required more pages.

Now for the darkness and size of the type. Bibles are printed on thinner paper so they aren't as heavy or as thick as they could be. There's a compromise between the thickness of the paper and show-through. With thinner paper, printers have to decrease the density or darkness of the type, so it doesn't show through to the other side. The type in this Bible is easily readable. There's nothing wrong with it at all. And, the large print is fine for my 62 year old bifocal eyes.

So much for answering others' complaints. The footnotes in this version are helpful and clear. They provide some much-needed explanation and practical application of the text. The only complaint I have is when there's excessive references to other verses or other footnotes. Too much back-and-forth is laziness on the part of editors.

That said, if you love to read and STUDY your Bible, you'll enjoy this one as much as I'm enjoying it. What we want more than anything is to understand what we're reading and be able to apply it to our life. This Bible gets high marks on both counts, thanks to the informative articles and good footnotes.

Five stars because the NIV Study Bible will definitely help you in your desire to get closer to God.
