The devotional is intended to be part of the 40 Days of Community small group series. I read the devotional in conjunction with being a part of a six-week small group study in our church. If you have read Rick Warren's, The Purpose Driven Life, you will find this study is an extension of Pastor Warren's belief in God's five purposes for your life. In the devotional's introduction Pastor Warren writes, "The goal of 40 Days of Community is to water the seeds of purpose that may have been planted in you life through reading The Purpose Driven Live." It was a good supplement to the group study, but I, personally, would not read it as a devotional apart from the study.

Doesn't deliver

Our church did an all-church study using this 40 Days of Community Devotional and the Study Guide that goes with it. While I appreciated and valued its focus on building community, the devotional did become quite repetitive after awhile. I do NOT recommend pairing this with the Study Guide as I found the Study Guide to be a 'bait and switch' experience. It's title held out the hope for fostering more connection with each other but didn't deliver. A more appropriate title for the Study Guide would have been: 40 Days of Organizing Service Projects. If you really want to foster connections between people at your church, I'd recommend choosing a different product altogether.

Important Question Answered Simply

We found this book shortly after my 6th grade son asked the question that is the title of the book. "What a coincidence," I thought. My son devoured the book and has gone on to win regionally in apologetics. I was afraid of this question at first, but quickly realized that if that question didn't get answered...I might fall into doubt myself! Simple enough for a third grader to read and compelling enough for an adult. My son highlighted the entire book when I found it later, and that led me to read it. Whether Christian or Atheist, you will appreciate the to-the-point reasons to believe that the ancient writ is worth reading. After loaning several copies out and never getting them back...which is ok right?...I've bought 3 more copies. Two are going into our church library, and one will be guarded heavily here at home. This book is no longer in print, so get them while you can....even the acceptable conditioned ones.

Not accurate.

If it was more accurate according to the Bible, I would have liked it a lot. I did like the last page that talks about why Jesus came. That was a nice addition to the Adam and Eve story. It is Okay for children to start with, but I prefer starting even small children with the actual truth, not a made up story that is not true.

Perfect Bible story for early readers

Got this as a take along book for my daughter. Wanted something to grow with her that was Biblical so that I can teach her to read and about Jesus at the same time.This book is great. When I can't read to her she is entertained by the pictures, but I can teach her simple words as I read and eventually she will learn to read it on her own. Very happy with this book and thrilled twee there are more.

Ever wanted someone to do something with you, and they didn't do it your way?
Emma discovers that Howie (and their love for each other) is WAY more important than a ruined Tea Party.
My granddaughters (4 and 6 years old) giggle through this whole book, especially when Howie LICKS the cookies on the plate!
What a relief to know that someone loves you for who you are!
Bright, cheerful, fun illustrations, too. Lots to talk about in the pictures.
Fun for kids, very insightful for grown-ups!

Howie's Tea Party

As a first grade teacher, I see this as a enjoyable book for my beginning readers. The children will love reading about all the trouble Howie gets into. It may remind them of the trouble they themselves cause. It is good for children to see love and forgiveness in action. I can't wait for the new school year to start so that I can share this series with them and see their delight.

Howie has no idea how to behave at a tea party which is so funny to my niece! She really likes to be the one to say "Howie" every time it appears in the book, so we play a fun little game. I read all the other words, but every time "Howie" appears, I point to her and she shouts it out. We love it!

Got my three-year-old discussing fly agarics at the dinner table!

My daughter has asked to read this book (and the two others we own from the series: Cats, Dogs, Hamsters, and Horses (I Can Read! / Made By God) and Spiders, Snakes, Bees, and Bats (I Can Read! / Made By God)) so many times that I almost have it memorized. Every page has a photograph matching the text, and the basic science info all seems accurate. I like that it includes God in the story in a natural and unforced way.

Of the three books in this series that we own, this one is my favorite. The writing flows well, as children are introduced to fly agarics (a type of mushroom), corpse plants, venus fly traps, redwoods, and sequoias. Tonight at dinner our three-and-a-half year old told Daddy all about fly agarics, emphasizing that we can't eat them for dinner because they would make us sick (which is true!). She has also decided that we should own a venus fly trap. I like how naturally God is woven into this book. For example, the section about corpse plants reads, "Another plant to stay away from is very smelly. It is called the corpse plant. God made this plant smell like rotten meat!" A secular text would have the same content, just with something like, "This plant smells like rotten meat!" Here God is given credit for creation without changing the type of content that would be included in any other book about plants.

(I will mention, as a disclaimer, that Zonderkidz provided me with this book to review. I was not asked to give a positive review - though, in this case, I was pleased to do so because we loved them! - just an honest one. I will be purchasing other I Can Read! books published by them after reading these, which shows how much we enjoy them!)

This is my 4 year old's favorite of the series because it introduced some very unusual plants he had never heard of (and he thought they were pretty cool). I love that it ties everything back to God and His creativity.

The Perfect Bible For Our Children!

Wow this is an awesome bible, we purchased two! One for our little boy and one for our little girl. We will also be purchasing several more for our other children as.

This bible is colorful and full of fun information for our children and us adults as well. Sometimes I tell our children to bring their bible and I read from theirs as well as our adult bibles. The bible is great for bible study with your family..

This bible is leather and comes in blue and gray and pink and green (two tone colors). So it is a joy to see our children read from these classy bibles. It is a joy to see them learn the word and grow in Christ. We could not have asked for better bibles.

We purchased these bibles over several years ago and they are still in new looking conditions. This bible is sturdy and a beauty to look at. Our children love there bibles. We have them read their bibles for reading time in addition to other reading material. Our children enjoy the stories and other information in the bible.

This bible has ten commandments for kids, bible themes, list of famous old testaments prophets, did you know sections on pages throughout the bible, life in bible times sections through out the bible, how to pray section that states how do I start, can I tell God anything etc. This bible also has life of Christ, which list the event and then the passage.

This bible has a few maps, with a map index, dictionary concordance, abbreviations section for example ge means Genesis etc. This bible is packed with many illustrations and activities like make action cards, make flash cards, make foot prints, talk about it, tell a story, think before you act, witness, etc. There is also a subject index, and a weights and measures section.

There is a words to treasure section through out the pages of this bible, getting to know Jesus page, A real neat sections on the 12 disciples that list the disciples as the word disciples is spelled out. A famous children of the bible page and a famous people of the bible page.. There is also a how to use this bible page in the front of the bible.

You really have to give this bible to your child or children as it will also come in handy for you as well. This is a great addition to any household.

Well back to preparing for bible study with our children.. I have always wanted to have a group bible study, and decided why not start right in our own household with our own family! We can invite others and them can come if they want. If not we will still enjoy and feast on the word of the Lord!

Perfect for my 5th Grader

I purchased this bible for my 10 year old 5th grader. His reading level is high for his age and I looked at teen bibles as well but found many of them to touch on dating and purity which, while valuable to address, my son is not ready to jump into that in great detail at this point in time. This bible is a perfect fit for his age both in context and the way this bible touches on the 9-12 year old developmental scope. Bottom line: he enjoys reading this bible which is what matters to me at this point. This bible is also more 'adult' looking on the cover which appeals to him.

This is a great Bible for any growing young adult. We got one for our 12 year old about 2 years ago and this purchase is for our son that just turned 10. I loved the layout of this Bible, the feel of this Bible, the extra material that makes the Adventure Bible an Adventure Bible without being too kiddie, and the prayers and scripture references. Shipping was fast from Amazon. This only reason I gave this Bible 4 stars and not 5 is the appearance. I Love the way my daughter Bible looks (she has the pink/green one). Hers is true to the image on Amazon but this one is not. When my son's Bible arrived I was a bit dissappointed to find that it was very dark. The bottom is more of a navy blue, the top is like a gunmetal grey, and the strap looks black. None the less he loves it and it is a great Bible just beware it's not an exact color match to the image.

About the Author

Sally Lloyd-Jones is a leading writer of inspirational books for children. She is the author of three bestselling children’s Bibles, including the Moonbeam Award winner and ALA notable The Jesus Storybook Bible, as well as Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing, winner of the ECPA Inspirational Book award. She has written many picture books for children, such as the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller How to Be a Baby: By Me, the Big Sister and Song of the Stars. Sam Shammas has a Master’s degree in English Literature from St Peter's College, Oxford University and trained at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Nearly worthless without purchase of curriculum

***Ten lessons later...I'm still irritated that I bought these. We're a homeschool family and we're attempting to use this package to begin our day with Bible study. So, instead of buying the expensive curriculum, I bought the Jesus Storybook Bible and the worksheets. FAIL. The worksheets really REQUIRE the curriculum for instructions. For example, Lesson 10 is a series of random letters, "QXTZHQEXLQQAZMXXBDZ..." and then a series of blanks below for the student to read the secret message...except there is no KEY to start the process! I can only assume that the instructions are included on the DVD or otherwise in the curriculum package. This is NOT a good "stand alone" product that will save you money. These worksheets are lovely and appealing, but often the exercises are worthless without the curriculum. Either skip the worksheets or buy the whole curriculum!

Not for Toddlers

Well produced and lovely handouts. Made for children around 4th grade. I bought this for my playschool children to supplement their lessons but these are not appropriate at all for that age. The children's ministry at the church will be using them for our older classes.

Ok, but doesn't suit my needs

I thought there would be more to them or that they could stand alone as a resource for using The Jesus Storybook Bible as a curriculum, as I am doing in my Sunday school class. We don't have the official curriculum materials, we are a small church & only have one children's class. There is no budget, I purchase all the materials & supplies myself, so I wouldn't have been able to buy it anyway. I'm taking the story each week & building activites around that weekly. The handouts are ok, for what they are, but I have a wide range of ages in my class & they really don't work for me. it would be helpful if you had the age range they target (6-10). I have anywhere from 3 yrs to 13 yrs. I would not have bought them if I could have inspected them ahead of time.

Need more children CD's from the Gaither's

This is good stuff and comes from the tracks of an original LP that we all enjoyed growing up in the 70s but it is just as fresh today. The children's voices were so tight and polished, obviously due to the inspiration of Bill & Gloria Gaither and Gary McSpadden. Well, I had my chance when they came to Jacksonville-Fla a couple of years ago. While Mr Gaither was heading to his dressing room during the intermission, I strode beside him and sang a few bars, mimicking his baritone/bass, "Let all the little children praise the Lord." He smiled. Then, he stopped and turned around and said, "You're going WAY back." Well, Jesus got a hold of my life and He won't let me go.

So, I've tried to reach out again to him and take the opportunity to ask him to please re-issue these. There are atleast two albums, but there is one in particular that was really good. So, not to take any chances: make them all available again on CD. I actually found some available through my church book store on cassette and I thought that they were re-released, so I purchased them all and gave each away to the kids in our choir and then I found out that they have been sitting on the shelf of this warehouse for years, but now they were gone for good. One of the vocal band members joked at this concert that the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum itself would fit in Bill's living room, so I know that he/you can get this done. Please, please release this again for the children's sake, and for us young at heart.

I was disappointed with this product. The book is OK, but the CD that comes along with it, which I expected to have the entire "I Am a Promise" song, only plays a few lines of the song....

An old song with memories attached!

I had an old LP by the Gaithers when I was a child with this song on it. So when I saw this title, I immediately wanted to look inside. And it was worth the look. Beautiful illustrations to match a beautiful message. My kids loved the story and wanted it read over and over. I highly recommend it!

About the Author

Laurie’s first published work was a note passed to a boy in elementary school. You would have thought that this most embarrassing moment would have stopped her writing career. But instead, Laurie is the author of thirty five books and author/illustrator of two more. Laurie lives in rural Ohio with her husband and two daughters and loves writing surrounded by horses, cattle, dogs, cats, and five turkeys.

Buket Erdogan was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. After studying Turkish textiles, she moved across the ocean to New York to design children’s clothing and illustrate children’s books. She illustrated the Mouse’s First series published by Simon & Schuster, three of which were New York Times bestsellers. She lives in Brooklyn with "the most inspiring artist," her daughter, Yagmur. Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton's My Valentine for Jesus is a simple, sweet book ideal for young children who are just getting into Valentine cards. In this board book, a little boy makes paper hearts for those he loves. "I'm saving back one little heart," he says, asking us to wait and see who he'll give it to.

First he gives a heart to Mommy, then Daddy and Grammy. Next is big brother, followed by baby. The last two page spread of the book reads:

"I give my heart to Jesus.
It's kind of small, like me.
But every tume I feel it beat,
I know he's loving me."

What I Like: The last line of the book is what makes this title so special. We're not just learning to show our love for our family and for God, but we're given this wonderful reminder: Every time our heart beats, it's saying "Jesus loves me." Throughout, Bucket Erdogan's illustrations are warm and rich, adding much interest.

What I Dislike: Nothing, although some parents may object that the last page show's the boy's drawing of Jesus.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Sweet rhyming board book.

I teach in a Christian preschool. This was a perfect book to tie in the love of Jesus with the Valentine theme of love. Why not teach the children about the real source of Love? It was a board book so sturdy enough to put in their hands in our book center.The sweet multi cultural illustration made it different from the traditional take on Valentine's Day and the rhyming text made it an easy read aloud.

Love for Jesus

This is such a colorful, interesting, sweet book. The boy is talking about giving love, kisses and hearts to all of his family, but saving one for the most important, which is Jesus.
I love this board book, for the wonderful rhyming words, colorful, bold pictures and enduring meaning.
We can give our hearts and love to all of our family and friends, but the most important is giving it to Jesus.
This book only has ten pages, but isn't a really short read. Each page has at least four or more lines and the rhymes are so sweet.
This is going to make a wonderful Valentine present for my grandson and also you may want to get one for your child, grandchild or special friend. I highly recommend this sweet book.

Good explanation of a difficult period

If you are looking for a good kid accessible explanation of the period between the Babylonian exile and the return under the Persian empire, get this book. It doesn't show much of the history, but it shows people's attitudes and the background to Ezekiel's prophecies.

Excellent Graphics and Story

This review covers the Kindle graphic novel Valley of the Dry Bones. This graphic novel was made especially for the Kindle. I have the less expensive black and white version of the Kindle which has a fairly small screen.

The smallness of the Kindle screen is a real issue with graphic novels. Troy, another Kindle graphic novel, has drawings so small that I cannot read the print. The magnification feature does not help in that it does not make the drawings large enough to make a difference. In this novel the print is small but it is readable. Barely. The drawings are excellent. They are full of detail and very good lighting effects are used. In almost every picture there is bright white to solid black giving a full tonal range to the drawings. Excellent work.

The story is well done. These Biblical stories can be dull as all get out, but this one pulls in a lot of human interest in a father - son conflict that is the mainstream of the story until the prophet takes over. The Biblical prophet Ezekiel tells the people of Israel that the fall of Jerusalem is not the end of their history. God will raise up the "dry bones" and make the nation whole again. The father-son quarrel serves as a vehicle for meeting the prophet and finding out about his predictions.

The drawings and the story are excellent for children. Nothing revealing about the women in the drawings and the story itself is easy to follow.

The star downgrade is for the smallness of the drawings. Another rather irritating thing is many pages are followed by a blank screen. This does not seem like a big deal until it happens for the 20th time. Then it starts to really drag across ones nerves.

A graphic novel

Kingdoms: Valley of Dry Bones, written by Ben Avery, tells the Biblical story from books of Kings I and II and Chronicles I and II, which feature the Ezekiel and Iddo. Ezekiel was a prophet who predicted the destruction of Solomon's temple by the Babylonians, and Iddo who was the chief of one of the Hebrew tribes and also a friend of Ezekiel.

The time frame for the story is the period from the Hebrews' exile from Babylon and their later return to the city. The story illustrates the Hebrews' attitudes towards God and their resentment of Ezekiel's prophecies. Iddo maintains his faith in God and his relationship with Ezekiel, which causes problems at home with his family.

The book is written as a graphic novel, so the black and white illustrations, by Gary Shipman, are central to the story. They are expressive, but rather dark in nature, as befits a story of this nature.

What I Like: Although I'm not a big fan of graphic novels, as I'd rather have the words create the pictures for me. But, I'm glad there are books like this out there for people who enjoy them, particularly when they are Bible-related. This might encourage some otherwise reluctant readers to read books like this to learn more about the Bible.

What I Dislike: Although the illustrations are well-done, they were a bit dark for my taste. I'm not a big fan of graphic novels, anyway, so it was difficult for me to appreciate the storyline when I didn't really like the illustrations. But, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them; someone else might appreciate them more.

Overall Rating: Good.

Age Appeal: Young adult.
