Honest, Real, and Healing

By the second page I knew I was in for a journey that would impact my daily life. God has a longing for me that is greater than any longing I have. I knew that in my head but it never quit stuck in my heart before.
When I first saw the title of the book, I admit I thought it would be an interesting read but maybe not hit where I'm at right now. Knowing it was written by Sheila Walsh made me want to pick it up. I was given a digital copy from the publisher, but not required to write a review. The book opened my eyes so much that I bought a physical copy at my own expense. It touched places of hurt that I didn't know were there. It gently made me want to let go of areas I knew I needed to in order for God to bring something so much better.
I've read many of Sheila's books, and this one is so open & so raw that at times my heart broke for her and what she has faced. She doesn't just draw on parts of her life from years ago, she's open about current struggles too. She opens up about things she's never talked about before. She weaves the story of David in with examples of her life so as readers we can see them apply to us. She also give accurate context of scripture so some things make much more sense than they once did. (Do you really know how tall Goliath was? Why does it matter so much? You'll have to read to find out.)
David is no longer just a shepherd, turned giant slayer, turned king to me. He's real. He had hurts, he made grave mistakes, and yet he was called a man after God's own heart.
This is a book I know I will be reading again because there is so much to take in. I've both been made aware of longings I never knew existed and received peace & healing that can only come from God. This is a book full of treasures.

Personal and packed full of insight and wisdom

Having heard Sheila speak at our church I was keen to read this book especially in the fact it also reflected on aspects of King David's life. I'm always keen to read fresh material on David.
This is a very personal and revealing book that is very readable. Sheila writes as she talks; I could even hear her Scottish accent as I read. As I found when I listened to her, her writing style quickly draws you in to her story and as a reader you're soon cheering her on. Sheila reveals some very deep matters within her heart, from her childhood, her first marriage and to recent challenges with her husband, Barry.
Sheila covers 10 topics that she's grappled with, many of which are very relevant to men, as evidenced by the association to David's life. To name a handful: Longing to be Protected, for Control, for your Rights and the one That One Thing You Think You Need to be Happy. I liked the parallel with David's life and there were some key lessons to be learnt, especially David's absolute belief in the goodness and faithfulness of God as well as his understanding of grace.
The book leads up to the final chapter - "The Longing for God Alone"! As Sheila outlines all of our longings ultimately are after God. She uses the three parables from Luke 15 to highlight God's great love for each one of us. As David says in 2 Samuel 22:20, " He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me." Each one of the three parallels demonstrate the delight the Father has for each of us. And what's more, He invites us to delight in Him.
It's in the daily delighting in God and being delighted upon where we find true peace and our purpose for being. I'm only now beginning to appreciate what this means.
I also completed the video series and accompanying study guide which was separate to this book and found both an excellent way of consolidating the key takeaways of Sheila's book.
Recommended. It would be a very good resource (with the videos and study guide) to experience in a group.

There Is Hope!

I first heard of Sheila Walsh 6 years ago when I first attended a Women of Faith event. When I heard her speak, I knew I had to find her books and begin reading them. She impacted my life greatly and I knew it was a God thing that I was able to go to WOF at the last moment. Since then I have read almost all of Sheila’s books and heard her speak two more times. When I first seen she was coming out with a new book, The Longing In Me, I knew I would be in for a treat. I was honored to be chosen to be on her launch team as well as be able to review this book for the publisher.
The Longing In Me is the book for any woman who is ready to make a change in their lives and let God lead you. Sheila is open and honest about the trials in her life and intertwines her story with the story of King David. This book is for those women who find themselves going in circles, making the same mistakes over and over again, and whose looking for fulfillment in all the wrong places. Sheila dives in and gives an accurate account of scripture and goes in details with the story of David.
I constantly find myself making the same mistakes over and over again and keep asking why do I this? Simply put, I’m not trusting God enough. I know I can change this with the help from a God who loves me. This book is a life changer and I highly recommend it to anyone who is ready to change. Change is hard but you don’t have to do it alone!!
