We are doing this series with our small group and love it! John Ortberg does an excellent job on DVD covering the specify topic of each chapter. We have found that the study guide requires us two meetings to cover the info. We usually watch the DVD twice as well. Lots of things to talk about in this book!

John Ortberg is totally transparent as he discusses the challenges we have with our souls and our connections to God. He clearly distinguishes the differences between the soul, mind, body and will. If you find that you are not at peace, that you struggle with your will not being strong enough, your mind deciding what you should be doing, and giving into the desires of the body, this book will engage and inspire you to deepen your soul connection to God. As John profoundly states in the book, your soul is the stream and you are the keeper of the stream. If the stream is clogged, it will not flow and you will not have the fresh water you need. This is a must read for anyone looking to deepen their walk with God and find the inner peace that few of us truly possess.

a book for all ages!

this book is amazing. my four year old was so excited to take the journey along with cody the caterpillar it is an amazing story that teaches young and old that God does and always has plans for us. all ages will love this book it was so fun even for me to read it along side my child and see the smile on his face page by turn. karen your gift of writting is amazing thank you for writting another book that i can share with my son..all of karens childrens books are amazing i suggest them to all! so order this now and sit back and look through codys eyes page by page. xoxo

Amazing Story

While the gorgeous illustrations alone with capture your child's attention, the storyline has a message for both young and old.

Our little caterpillar friend Cody lives a life in boring brown and longs for something more. He is told by a passing bird and again by a butterfly that his future is colorful, bright, and beautiful he just needs to trust that God has a plan for him and let that plan unfold. Then one day he forms a cocoon and another he struggles to free himself from it only to discover that the struggle has made him beautiful. He then makes it a point to share the promise of God's plan with other caterpillars.

The message here is layered. Trust that God knows what He is doing. Patience is a virtue. Be content. Share the Good News.

It is rare that you come across a book with a science lesson, morality lesson, Bible lesson, great writing and beautiful illustrations. This one has it all. I highly recommend it!

Beautiful

I ordered this book for my daughter for her 5th birthday looking to find more Christian based books for our library. Little did I know this was Gods plan wrapped in a book for us. We have been struggling quite a bit for many months now and reading this book with my daughter has been a huge blessing! "The struggle, the struggle, is what gives you wings" such a true statement.... Beautiful! I feel that this book is essential in every one of Gods little princesses library.... My daughter loves it... We read it almost every night! Not to mention.... It mentally prepares children for how life really can be... Not just a simple fairy story.... Real and true to life lessons in here:) LOVE IT! Must buy!!!

Not just for Christians

I'm not a Christian, but I was looking for some good fiction to read, so an acquaintance loaned me these three books. I have to say I was totally hooked from the first book. I read the first one in one night, the next book in just a couple days and the third book over a long weekend. They're excellent for teens, but fine for adults to read, too. I have respect for Christianity, even though I'm not a believer, so that aspect of the books didn't turn me off at all. I just think they're exciting, clean thrillers (I did like that there was no gore, murder, violence, etc.) Good for any age, ten years and up I'd say. Oh, and I'm not a teenager, I'm thirty years old and still found them interesting.

Teen Christian I will pass on to my kids

I did not realize this was a teen Christian book until I started reading it. That being said I read this book in under two days. I have read very few books on occults and the fact that my child may come across them is very disturbing. I thought the books were teen friendly, well written and definatley a page turner. I like how the short stories each cover another topic of demons while still focusing on your faith in God. I will definatley be moving this book into my daughters library when she reaches 12 years of age.

Wish I had read it sooner

This is an easy-to-read textbook on youth ministry by a proven professional. Drawing from the same principles as Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Church, Fields (who is Warren's youth pastor at Saddleback Community Church) gives the foundational principles for youth ministry, explaining the different stages of faith commitment in adolescents, and providing strategies for a complete youth ministry.
Good: This book is an easy read, and doesn't require theological or professional ministry experience to understand, and yet is thorough. Any person who has basic relational skills and a heart to reach kids will be set to go after reading this book.
Bad: Fields is constantly uses lists and acronyms to teach his points. Examples: the different stages of faith commitment (core, committed, congregation, crowd, and community); spiritual lifestyle H.A.B.I.T.S. (hang time with God, accountability with another believer, Bible memorization, involvement with the church body, tithing commitment, study of the scripture); his method for discovering spiritual gifts called S.H.A.P.E. (spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences). A little of this goes a long way, and if you try to take it in too quickly it will fry your brain.
Opinion: This is the best book on youth ministry that I've read. Fields leaves no bases uncovered, from working with parents to handling discipline. I wish I had read this book before my first youth pastorate. It would have saved me many mistakes.
Best Quote: Two come to mind, but they're related to the same thing: "Leadership separates a purpose-driven youth ministry from an event-and-activity-driven youth ministry." The second one is this: "Better to have two high-standard student leaders than fifty students who want to plan activities while they live any lifestyle they please."

Practical yet........

Doug does a great job with this book. It has extremely practical teaching that is easy to apply to any cultural ministry scenario that a youth pastor can face. The problem, however, is that I can design a great program that humms like a machine and sends a message, but that doesn't change a teenager's heart. While I know, first hand, that Doug's ministry has changed thousands of hearts, if not more, I feel that his book understates some important issues: 1) Prayer is the key to any ministry's survival. 2) The issue of shepherding (relationships built with staff, and youth is far more important that simply having an airtight mission statement etc. BOTTOM LINE- This book is a great tool, but not the end-all ministry guide that many have made it in to. I would love to see a sequal by Doug that delves deeper into issues of prayer and shepherding.

Better than expected

I was required to read this for a class and did not anticipate it at all. I thought it would simply be filled with a planned out to-do-list on how to make a successful youth ministry. After reading Rick Warrens (the head pastor of Field's church) book, "The Purpose Driven Life," I thought I would find the same structure. I must say that I was rather surprised and pleased to find the opening chapter to focus on the true purpose of youth ministry. That is: it isn't a compitition for success. Nevertheless it was still proceeded by explanations of successful youth ministry strategies. Of course, the intentions of reading the book probably is to learn them. I was much more willing to listen after reading the first chapter. There are helpful strategies mentioned in the book but it is not the best youth min. book I have read. The biggest fault is that Fields use his church for examples of all ministry. I find a problem in this because not all ministry is alike.

John Mark Comer lives, works, and writes in the urban core of Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Tammy, and their three children, Jude, Moses, and Sunday. He is the pastor for teaching and vision at Bridgetown: A Jesus Church, which is part of a family of churches in Portland. Before planting Bridgetown, John Mark was the college pastor at a megachurch and played in a band. Much Needed for Our Generation

This book is a MUST read for the young adult generation! For the youth in general...really, any age group can learn from this book! It is one of the best books I have ever read on Love, Sex, and Marriage and was very eye opening. John Comer breaks these topics down in a way that is very encouraging and thought-provoking at the same time. I LOVE this book! Outstanding :)

This series distills the most important facts about each and presents a well-reasoned, cogent Christian response. The authors in this series are highly qualified, well-respected professional Christian apologists with considerable expertise on their topics. We have designed the structure and layout to help you find the information you need as quickly as possible. All the volumes are written in outline form, which allows us to pack substantial content into a short book. With some exceptions, each book contains, first, an introduction to the cult, movement, or belief system. The introduction gives a brief history of the group, its organizational structure, and vital statistics such as membership. Second, the theology section is arranged by doctrinal topic, such as God, Christ, sin, and salvation. The movement’s position is set forth objectively, primarily from its own official writings. The group’s teachings are then refuted point by point, followed by an affirmative presentation of what the Bible says about the doctrine. The third section is a discussion of witnessing tips. While each witnessing encounter must be handled individually and sensitively, this section provides some helpful general guidelines, including both dos and don’ts. The fourth section contains annotated bibliographies, listing works by the groups themselves and books written by Christians in response. Fifth, each book has a parallel comparison chart, with direct quotations from the cultic literature in the left column and the biblical refutation on the right. Some of the books conclude with a glossary. One potential problem with a detailed outline is that it is easy to lose one’s place in the overall structure. Therefore, we have provided graphical "signposts" at the top of the odd numbered pages. Functioning like a "you are here" map in a shopping mall, these graphics show your place in the outline, including the sections that come before and after your current position. (Those familiar with modern computer software will note immediately the resemblance to a "drop-down" menu bar, where the second-level choices vary depending on the currently selected main menu item.) In the theology section we have also used "icons" in the margins to make clear at a glance whether the material is being presented from the cultic or Christian viewpoint. For example, in the Mormonism volume the sections presenting the Mormon position are indicated with a picture resembling the angel Moroni in the margin; the biblical view is shown by a drawing of the Bible. The history of the Masonic Lodge (also known as Freemasonry) is not easy to recount. According to Dr. Alvin Schmidt, one of the world’s leading scholars on fraternal organizations, Freemasonry officially began in London, England in 1717 at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern. This conclusion is supported by the consensus of scholars and historians. 2. Despite this scholarly consensus, the origin has been disputed by members of the craft itself, who claim various origins dating back to the creation of humankind. B. A Beuatiful and Meaningful Companion to the Jesus Storybook Bible

As a Christ following mother of three, I became familiar with this author because of the fantastic Jesus Storybook Bible. I am thrilled to see that this book has the same characteristics that led my family to enjoy the Storybook Bible so much. It is visually pleasing with gorgeous illustrations and a great feeling hardback book. The content is equally pleasing-- theologically sound (foreward by Tim Keller) and well written prose.

My children enjoy this book, but some days it functions as a devotion for me too.

Highly recommend.

This book is filled with the most joyful, deeply meaningful, and encouraging messages...each page is a separate pearl, containing a wonderful thought, and a bible verse. The icing on the cake is the absolutely stunning illustrations. I cannot decide which is more captivating, the words, or the gorgeous artistic accompaniment. The truth is that each stands up to, and enhances the other. I have enjoyed reading this book myself; have purchased it for each of my children (ages 12-21) and nieces...and had to send one to my 74 year old mother, to read to her step-grand-babies.
I'm sure this book will inspire many evenings, and be a treasured favorite.
Well done Sally! the Jesus Storybook Bible was exceptional, but this is another realm of inspiration altogether...

All Aboard with Noah- Great for your preschooler!

The book is recommended for ages 3-6. I will tell you that my daughter is 27 months old and she loves it. I know each child is different. For us, this book is perfect for her development level. The book provides many opportunities for learning, while telling the story of Noah and the Ark. The lift flaps provide fun and interaction for your child. There are activities such as identifying colors, match up animals, explore sounds, and more. I am very pleased to have this book for Grace. The illustrations are great, and will look familiar if you have any of the Beginner's Bible series. We have The Beginner's Bible for Toddlers, which we love!!! I recommend that as well, if you are looking for a "first" bible for your little one.

This book would also make a great gift, if you are buying for a toddler/ preschooler.

My grandson loves to pull the flaps up on this book. The story is short but true to the biblical meaning. I'm looking for more like this (bible or not) since he can't get enough interaction.
