Martin's first book is an immense and appealing study of how Billy Graham became the "world's most influential Christian leader" and how Early America virtually became a Christian nation. The account starts 350 years ago with the Pilgrims spreading evangelical fervor, then progresses to portray Graham, now 72, as following the leads of evangelists like D. L. Moody and Billy Sunday. Martin, professor of sociology at Rice University, conducted some 100 interviews; he discovered no scandals but he found Graham to be a man of party politics as well as religious principles. We learn, for instance, that Graham successfully courted the favor of then North Carolina governor Strom Thurman and of Harry Truman years before his support of the Republican ticket in 1956, well before he became known as Nixon's pope.

Martin, an experienced writer on both the topics of religion and politics, brings Billy Graham to a new audience. As he tells Graham’s story, Martin pays equal attention to his evangelism and his evolution as a man of God. Despite Graham’s growing fame, he and his wife, Ruth, eschewed wealth, keeping their eyes on the prize—winning souls for Christ. Yet as his spotlight grew, Graham also made decisions that helped shape the country’s attitudes; for instance, integrating his staff in the 1950s, and listening to rock music to understand what was attracting so many young people. Throughout, Martin hits on plot points that will appeal to teen readers, like how acutely the five Graham children missed their father as he constantly traveled. However, this is mostly about the peaks of Graham’s career: the leaders he met and counseled; the historic places he visited; his capacity-crowd revivals that changed lives. With the writing so fine, it’s too bad about the paper quality and the paucity of photographs. Still, this is a fascinating story well told. Grades 6-9. --Ilene Cooper

excellent book

I hacwe always loved Billy Graham and listened to his sermons often. I love this book, it describes the man of God I knew him to be and added some information I was glad to get.

Interesting biography

My thoughts:
This is a biography of the life and ministry of Billy Graham. It has a few pictures throughout. I thought it was a good overview of the life of this man who has touched many lives for Christ. I learned some things about him as well about his life as a boy, his marriage and children, and his crusades. He formed relationships with people throughout his life and these helped in later in life. It was amazing to read about the many famous people he has been able to reach.

It is considered juvenile nonfiction.

This book was provided to me for my review from the publisher. Thank you.

A Prophet With Honor: The Billy Graham Story - misrepresented in the condition of the book

When I ordered the item it was under the category of "new". When it arrived it was extremely obvious that it was a "used" book. THe packaging was more than sufficient, thick cardboard with bubble wrap around the entire book, but the cover had a piece missing, was wrinkled on the spine, and the pages were definitely not in new condition. Very disappointed and will not order from this company again!

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from the family home and studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Good story, but...

My 4-year-old likes this book, and as a parent, I like the main theme. Brother Bear is kind to a young kid at the park, and at the end of the book, his kindness is rewarded. There's less conflict/misbehavior in this book than many of the other Berenstain Bears books. Be advised that this book does contain a couple of Biblical references that kind of sneaked up on us. This was not a problem or a perk to us, I guess, but for some people it may be one or the other.

horrible way to teach kindness

This book purports to teach a lesson about kindness by showing that if you are kind to others then you will get something in return. Really? That is the reason we should be kind to others?? What a terrible moral lesson to teach anyone, especially a child.

We love all of these books. Jonah is still one of our son's favorite stories and he is now 7. These books were a great way for us to introduce Jesus to our son. Books are durable and colorful. Stories are simple yet effective in relaying the messages that are being taught.

Brilliant

My two year old loves this book. It is a brilliant way of exposing children to God's word. It retells the parable to the sower in a very gentle and loving way. When the reading comes up this year (RCL Year A) I will be using this to preach from rather than the actual biblical text. I wish I had the imagination and inspiration to retell stories like this. Get it for your kids or grandkids. The only problem is it's out of print...

1. COMPLIMENTS MAY BE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN You've just returned home from a weekend retreat. You settle onto the couch and give thanks for the weekend's success. You're grateful your boss gave you the time off work. You're thankful God used your new truck to transport kids. Not getting reimbursed for the gasoline doesn't even bother you. Your thoughts turn to the kids in your cabin. You really love them even though they disappeared in the middle of the night to raid the kitchen. You think of Johnny, who had a life-changing experience due in part to your late-night conversations, constant attention, and unending love. You begin to pray for him, but the phone rings, interrupting your prayer. It's Johnny's mom. You initially think she called to thank you for her son's wonderful weekend. Wrong . Within seconds you learn she called to ask why Johnny didn't return home with all his underwear. She also questions your wisdom in allowing the boys to kill cockroaches with Johnny's aerosol deodorant. Does this sound familiar? I'm sure you've already discovered the infrequency of praise for your tireless service. To enjoy long-term youth ministry your validation must come from the confidence that God is using you to impact the lives of young people, not from the praise of others. 2. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS IS EFFECTIVE YOUTH MINISTRY Quality youth ministry is built on the foundation of meaningful relationships. Beyond all the hype and flashy programs, it's the relationships with kids that measure an outstanding youth group. Your relationship with kids will last years longer than the faint memory of your best message. Messages are important, but relationships impact kids more than speeches do. I really wish kids remembered my messages ... but they don't. They remember the time we spent together. Teenagers need strong relationships with adults. Though few admit it, they desire significant relationships with older people. When your kids feel the love you have for them, they will understand your spoken messages about God's love much better. Build relationships that will continue beyond graduation. It is exciting to watch kids grow and develop, understanding that part of their maturity came from a relationship that a classroom couldn't offer. 3. CONGRATULATIONS—YOU'RE A MODEL! Here's a scary truth: You are constantly communicating a message to the kids you work with. They consciously and unconsciously take note of everything! They watch how you live, how you love the unlovely, how you deal with authority, how you react in difficult situations, how you handle pain, and how you treat your family. They watch because you are a significant adult in their life, and they are looking for answers and direction. I grew up in a youth ministry with many quality adult leaders. I watched dozens of lessons I've never forgotten. I saw adults love others, give others dignity, and encourage the hurting. These adults didn't need to say, "Doug, let me teach you a lesson on how to care for people." Their lifestyles were a continual curriculum to an impressionable mind and heart. So is yours! Remember, young eyes focus on your life. 4. FULL-TIME YOUTH MINISTRY ISN'T WHAT IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE A paid ministry position can seem more glamorous than volunteer work. The impression is that full-time youth work is more fun, constantly affirming, and always filled with quality time with students. Not true! A paid position does not necessarily equal effectiveness. You can often have a more worthwhile ministry as a volunteer than in a paid ministry position. My wife, Cathy, has a great volunteer ministry. When kids want to talk about problems or important life issues, they approach Cathy. She has deep, meaningful conversations with kids. She can spend her ministry time building significant relationships while I'm at the office making flyers, returning phone calls, and digging out from under the administrative piles that come with a paid position. I've met dozens of ex-volunteers who decided seminary and a career change would make their ministry more effective. Most of them were wrong. They ended up disappointed. As a volunteer, you're the church's most valued treasure. Unless you're confident of God's calling into full-time ministry, remain a volunteer and allow your present employer to finance your youth work. 5. LET KIDS KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE IN THEM Kids have the power to make a difference in this world. They need to know that. Their growing years are filled with self-doubt. They constantly question their existence. You can empower them with four simple words: "I believe in you." These words can transform impressionable adolescents in a world that views them as "excess baggage." Jesus did this with his disciples. He looked beyond their sins and inadequacies and said, "I believe in you." That's what he did when he changed Simon's name to Peter, meaning "rock." (I'm assuming Peter's friends thought a more appropriate name would be Sandy or Pebbles!) Then Jesus showed that he believed in Peter. Jesus gave him a vital role in establishing the early church. (Check the Book of Acts to see how Peter lived up to Jesus' words.) Teenagers change when someone believes in them and views them through God's eyes. One day, a female volunteer told Beth that she believed Beth would become a woman of God. At the time, I didn't think much about her comment. But afterwards, Beth told the volunteer that her words became a challenge. That affirmation was a turning point in Beth's life. Beth continues to grow and demonstrate godly qualities. I'm not suggesting that Beth's maturity is solely due to the volunteer's words, but the affirmation gave her strength to pursue a godly lifestyle.

Excellent nugget, but not a treatise

Perfect book to hand out to your youth ministry volunteers, and to go over and discuss. It's a small book, with one bit advice per page. It's not long on words - this thing is not a book about youth ministry, or how to do youth ministry. It's a short, quickie book of reminders to adults of how to interact and be in relationship with young people. So don't get this if you are looking for a how-to book, but definitely get it for something to give to the team, and also for yourself to look over from time to time and be reminded of some relational things you might have forgotten about, etc.
It's also usable in pretty much every church - whether conservative or liberal, evaneglical, charismatic, or mainline, since it isn't about teaching doctrine, but about how to be with young poeple (and not go insane, and not drive them insane).
I am quite impressed with it, and certainly think that all youth ministers and youth ministry volunteers should have a copy. Very helpful.

Essential Guide for Youth Workers

What an amazing book! I read this book on my lunch break at work. If you are just getting started in youth ministry, this is a good introduction. It is a brief overview of what youth ministry involves. Mr. Fields also provides good insight for the most experienced youth workers. All too often, youth workers are over worked and under appreciated. This book reminds you of why you do what you do in youth ministry.
While I highly recommend this book, I will add that it is not filled with in depth information. It is just an overview, a spark to re-ignite the flame in youth workers.

A perfect study for the times in which we live

There's nothing new here, but a lot we need to be reminded of as we "do church" in American culture in the 21st century. Andy Stanley takes us back to the early church, not to create a to-do list, but to see how and why the early Christians were so successful that they changed the world. This is a great study for small groups, but I would recommend that you watch the whole messages instead of the small-group curriculum. You'll be better able to put things into their proper context.

Don't settle for being just a Christian

This book/study is powerful. Not to be approached lightly. If you're just doing the bare minimum, sliding by as a Christian, this will make you uncomfortable. The study pushes where all of us need pushing I suspect - to become better disciples of Christ, and to not just be Christians in the general sense. We used this as a small group study in my church with adults and in another group with High School students and both groups were 100% in their responses that it is well worth your time and that it was quite challenging. I love Andy Stanley's ability to clearly get to the single big idea and then present it in ways that are memorable and meaningful. He's a master communicator, and really shines in this series.

About the Author

John Baker is the founder of Celebrate Recovery®, a ministry started at Saddleback Church. It is estimated that over the last 25 years more than 3.5 million people have gone through this Christ-centered recovery program. There are currently over 27,000 churches that have weekly Celebrate Recovery meetings.

John has been on staff since Celebrate Recovery started. He has served as the Pastor of Membership, the Pastor of Ministries, and is currently the Pastor of Saddleback Church’s Signature Ministries. He is also serving as one of the nine Elder Pastors at Saddleback. John is a nationally known speaker and trainer in helping churches start Celebrate Recovery ministries.

John’s writing accomplishments include Celebrate Recovery’s The Journey Begins Curriculum, Life’s Healing Choices, the Celebrate Recovery Study Bible (general editor), and The Landing and Celebration Place (coauthor). This is not the cover for Celebrate Recovery Participant Guide Number 2 "Taking an Honest and Spiritual Inventory Participant's Guide 2". This is also NOT the Celebrate Recovery Leaders Guide either. All 4 CR Participant Guides should not have the label "Leader's Guide" in the title. That is confusing buyers. The CR Leaders Guide is a separate download on Kindle.
