About the Author
Dave Veerman played high school basketball and football and college football, has finished six marathons, and is a die-hard Cubs fan. A graduate of Wheaton College and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Dave has written more than sixty books. He also served as a Senior Editor of the Life Application Study Bible and Student’s Life Application Study Bible. The father of two daughters and a founding partner of The Livingstone Corporation, Dave and his wife, Gail, live in Naperville, Illinois.
Dana Niesluchowski played a variety of sports in junior high and high school and received her B.S. degree in Kinesiology from Wheaton College and her M.A. in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She loves all sports and is an avid runner, and she especially enjoys cheering for the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, and Fire. While with Livingstone, Dana contributed to many resources, including the Legacy Bible, Lose It for Life, and iStand―the Power of Courageous Choices. Dana recently left Livingstone to be a stay-at-home mom for her new son, Edmund. She and husband, Walter, live in Oswego, Illinois.

Good on Trivia...Weak on Devotions

Full of interesting facts about every sport you can imagine, this book captures your attention from the beginning. The main stories are varied and will introduce the reader to interesting atheletes from across the globe. In addition to the standard sports stories, you will read about the disabled golfer, the pro women's bowler, and the one-legged mountain climber just to name a few. Each day's reading includes Birthdays, "On This Day" section and a "Fun Fact". Mixed in with all of these cool readings is a weekly quiz so that you can see how much you remember from the readings. Sadly, though, where is the devotional message within the book? It is in one small verse on each page. Easily missed if you are not looking for it. Occasionally the devotional thought is tied into the reading for the day...maybe making the last sentence of the last paragraph. Disappointing especially when the back cover of the book indicates that "you'll discover points and principles from the Bible and sports for your own life and competition." This book is strong in sports information and trivia; weak in Biblical application.
I would not purchase it as a devotional. However, if I had a child who loved sports trivia I would purchase it for the triva information alone! I received this book for free from ZonderKids Publishing Group for this review. I was not required to give a positive review and my opinions are my own.

Great devotional for a kid who loves sports

Filled with facts, sports history as well as Bible lessons and verses, Sports Trivia Devotional is special book is written specifically for a sports-minded boy or girl. This book is educational and a lot of fun.
A wide variety of sports are included in this book, from the usual basketball and football, to more obscure ones such as dog sledding and bowling. Using Bible verses and devotional lessons, this book covers character building topics ranging from losing and integrity to attitude and consistency.
With such a wide range of sports and character topics, the handy index in the back of the book to be invaluable for focusing in on specific issues to explore. Using the index chart, kids can look up information found in the book either by Bible verse, character theme and specific sport. So although the book is a one year devotional organized in a typical 12-month format, kids can read and learn from this book any way they want.
For kids who are hard-core sports crazy, this book also contains 50 quizzes to test their knowledge. Quiz topics range from "Match the sport with the surface it is played on" to "Baseball World Series Trivia." I'm not so sports-minded, but I did ok with the "Sports Trophy and Award" quiz.
The target age for this book would be ages 9+ but parents of the young kids might want to use a bit of discretion. The book does discuss the arrest of Mike Tyson and the gambling admission of Pete Rose, the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol, and the misuse of power and fame. Personally I thought this book handled sensitive topics very well, with Bible verses and devotional lessons that did not glamorize the behavior at all.
Sports Trivia Devotional is a book that any kid would love, but sports nuts will really enjoy the trivia, quiz and cool photos of all kinds of athletics. In fact, some sports adults would love this book too!

Great jumping off point for devotional time

My 9 year old son is an avid reader and a fan of all sports. I bought him this book for Valentine's Day to use as a jumping off point for bedtime devotional/discussion time with his dad. They have both enjoyed reading it. My son is motivated to do the reading himself. It does not replace our daily Bible reading. However, it does provide some interesting dialogue for discussing applicaton of biblical principles in a way that is relevant and interesting to him. He certainly won't become a Bible scholar from reading this book, but I really did not expect it to be packed with theology. I would recomment this book and plan to buy it again as a gift.
