Martin's first book is an immense and appealing study of how Billy Graham became the "world's most influential Christian leader" and how Early America virtually became a Christian nation. The account starts 350 years ago with the Pilgrims spreading evangelical fervor, then progresses to portray Graham, now 72, as following the leads of evangelists like D. L. Moody and Billy Sunday. Martin, professor of sociology at Rice University, conducted some 100 interviews; he discovered no scandals but he found Graham to be a man of party politics as well as religious principles. We learn, for instance, that Graham successfully courted the favor of then North Carolina governor Strom Thurman and of Harry Truman years before his support of the Republican ticket in 1956, well before he became known as Nixon's pope.

Martin (sociology, Rice Univ.) chronicles the 40-year career of Graham, the foremost modern evangelical prophet, and offers an overview of the foundations of evangelism and the conflicts with fundamentalists. Martin gives a sense of Graham as a man of theology, not of administrative work, with influence on the world and politics. Graham describes an evangelist as "a person with a special gift and a special calling from the Holy Spirit to announce the good news of the gospel." Sources used include interviews and texts. Martin, an experienced writer on both the topics of religion and politics, brings Billy Graham to a new audience. As he tells Graham’s story, Martin pays equal attention to his evangelism and his evolution as a man of God. Despite Graham’s growing fame, he and his wife, Ruth, eschewed wealth, keeping their eyes on the prize—winning souls for Christ. Yet as his spotlight grew, Graham also made decisions that helped shape the country’s attitudes; for instance, integrating his staff in the 1950s, and listening to rock music to understand what was attracting so many young people. Throughout, Martin hits on plot points that will appeal to teen readers, like how acutely the five Graham children missed their father as he constantly traveled. However, this is mostly about the peaks of Graham’s career: the leaders he met and counseled; the historic places he visited; his capacity-crowd revivals that changed lives. With the writing so fine, it’s too bad about the paper quality and the paucity of photographs. Still, this is a fascinating story well told. Grades 6-9. --Ilene Cooper

excellent book

I hacwe always loved Billy Graham and listened to his sermons often. I love this book, it describes the man of God I knew him to be and added some information I was glad to get.

Interesting biography

My thoughts:
This is a biography of the life and ministry of Billy Graham. It has a few pictures throughout. I thought it was a good overview of the life of this man who has touched many lives for Christ. I learned some things about him as well about his life as a boy, his marriage and children, and his crusades. He formed relationships with people throughout his life and these helped in later in life. It was amazing to read about the many famous people he has been able to reach.
It is considered juvenile nonfiction.

A Prophet With Honor: The Billy Graham Story - misrepresented in the condition of the book

When I ordered the item it was under the category of "new". When it arrived it was extremely obvious that it was a "used" book. THe packaging was more than sufficient, thick cardboard with bubble wrap around the entire book, but the cover had a piece missing, was wrinkled on the spine, and the pages were definitely not in new condition. Very disappointed and will not order from this company again!
