About the Author

Dandi Daley Mackall is the author of over 450 books. She still can’t believe she gets to write for a living, helping children of all ages grow spiritually. Dandi and her husband, Joe, both write from rural Ohio, where they’re blessed with three children and a variety of horses, dogs, and cats.

 

Guy’s first successful Christmas drawing was in third grade. His teacher, Mrs. Passarelli, had instructed the class to draw Christmas trees. Upon seeing Guy’s drawing, she stopped him and told him, "That’s perfect, don’t do anything more! Don’t touch it anymore!" She held Guy’s drawing up to the class as an example of how a Christmas tree should look - an encouraging first encounter with an art director.

Jolly Old Saint Nick, simplified

You might think it would be easy to translate the real story of Saint Nicholas of Myra into picture book form so that it can be shared with children. But the task is more complex than it first appears. If you research the origins of our Santa Claus, you either come up with voluminous information about travels, miracles, and patronage; or you land on a single statement that insists that no confirmed historical facts exist about him. It's tough to boil down the facts, such as they are, and figure out an engaging way to present them to young people.

Dandi Daley Mackall takes a stab at the assignment with THE LEGEND OF ST. NICHOLAS, which puts a contemporary twist on the historical account. The book begins with a boy named Nick who goes last-minute Christmas shopping with his father. Nick is more focused on what he'd like to get for himself, not on presents for his little brothers. But he overhears a department-store Santa retelling the story of Saint Nicholas. He learns a bit about a young man who saw suffering and had enough wealth of his own to help out his friends and deposit anonymous gifts at their homes. When he later saw how much his gifts were appreciated, Saint Nicholas decided to celebrate Christmas in that fashion from that point on. Hearing this tale had its effect on real-time Nick, and in no time he was busy figuring out what to get for his family members.

The plot is nicely done, even if we don't believe that a young person can be turned around so quickly these days. Guy Porfirio's illustrations are rich in color and expression (though the text mentions that Nick is ogling CDs, not the DVDs that he is seen holding in one scene). Children might be stunned at first to see Saint Nicholas depicted as a handsome young man, not much older than themselves. But of course that's the point! And I think it is well made here. Good job!

Mackall and Porfirio are not the first ones to tackle this subject, and they surely won't be the last. Other good picture book treatments include: Marianna Mayer's "The Real Santa Claus," which provides a detailed history of Nicholas' life; Demi's "The Legend of Saint Nicholas," which streamlines a similar history and features iconic illustrations; and "The Baker's Dozen: A Saint Nicholas Tale" by Aaron Shepard and Wendy Edelson, which brings to life a simple and colorful American folktale of gratitude, inspired by the saint. Each one is worthy of sharing with a child during the holiday season.

BIG hit with my Young Kids

My kids loved this book and it is an easy way for you to introduce the concept that Santa Clause is not real without just shattering their little hearts. By reading this book and talking about the history of the St. Nicholas tradition they were able to figure it out on their own and be ok with it. They still love playing the "Santa Game" and get all giddy at Christmas but not the focus is on the fun of trying to surprise others through helping or serving them and giving purposeful and unique to them gifts for others and not just on what they will receive.

nice and simple perfect for children

This story of Saint Nicholas is simple and perfect for reading to children on Christmas eve. The language is simple and easy for them to understand. The story is simple as it tells the story of Nicholas, a boy of the fourth century who unselfishly gives his belongings to his friends on Christmas day, vowing to do so ever after in honor of the Christ. The pictures are well done and the story tells us of another Nicholas who learns the true meaning of Christmas from Santa Claus. Simply put,if you are looking for a way to explain Santa Claus and Christmas, I feel this simple book will help.

Good discussion starter

I bought this product for a small group at my church, hoping to get in touch with those who haven't been interested in Bible study but were still looking for something intellectually grabbing. When I first started reading "The Reason For God", I was skeptical whether it would be too alienating for my mostly theologically-liberal congregation. I have been pleasantly surprised, however, with the discussions that have been sparked in the first two sessions. The DVD has been helpful in getting the ball rolling, even with those who haven't had the chance to read the chapter yet.

Two other observations: This book is somewhat academic, and the 6 sessions don't line up directly with the order of the chapters in the book. I had one person buy the book, begin reading, and back out of the study because she'd rather keep her faith "simple". I got around the chapter order issue by letting participants read the book in order and then just selecting the DVD session that matched the chapter. So far, this adaptation has been fine.

Very helpful whether you are a person of faith or not

The series of six short videos by Tim Keller discussing issues to the Christian faith with a diverse collection of people who self-identify as not being religious is very helpful to anyone with interest in such matters. First off, it is a thoughtful and civil discussion, an element many are sure to find appealing in the prevailing climate where parties of differing views are too readily on the attack. Second, many people operate and voice their opinions out of some ignorance of the subject, and this series of short videos helps dispel myths about what the truth claims of Christianity are and their implications for life and action. Moreover, it will help those with a strong faith to understand the issues that non-believers struggle with. In my experience, knowing well what the other side believes in a discussion makes for better interchange of ideas and a more civil society. Third, each video is only about twenty minutes so it is easy to re-watch and not too much to take in at once. Finally, the leader discussion guide, while designed to help a leader facilitate, also makes good reading because it fleshes out some of the points and discussion from the video. All in all, virtually anyone can utilize this product and come away with a better appreciation for what is going on in someone who does not share their convictions about faith and the Christian religion.

Another Great Lesson and Adventure for the Bears

What a wonderful this story is and so true to many a family life. The Berenstain Bears have always been wonderful, but the Go to Sunday School story is a great one to share and explain to family how great going to church and Sunday School can be, even for a bear. :)

I highly recommend this story for families, especially those with kids ages 4-7. This and all the other Berenstain Bear books, especially the newest ones coming from Mike Berenstain, son to the creators Jan and Stan. How busy is your life? Can you find time for church and Sunday School as a family?

A lot of reading

Compared to other Berenstain bears books, the new ones by Mike Berenstain have a lot of words and can get a little boring and mundane. They also don't start with the clever little rhyme like his parents did. They still teach the lesson but it's a little bit over kill and if you are reading these at bedtime (like myself) suddenly your reading time is quite a bit longer, so instead of 2 books you may only have time for 1.

Great teaching tool!!!

I love how this was written. We have the NIV version and wanted the KJV. So we found it on here and my wife wanted it. It's a great way to read the bible, the way it should be read. Easy to follow and understand and the timeline helps out a lot. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to understand the bible. No matter if your a beginner or a scholar it is a great tool.

Not worth buying

This book explains body changes, body types, menstruation, pads, tampons, breasts, bras, hygiene, the importance of exercise and a healthy diet, boy issues, and why you should avoid drugs, alcohol, and smoking. The book is written in a friendly, reassuring way, and each chapter has a section with Bible verses that relate to the topic at hand.

However, there are many things I didn't like about the book. Each chapter begins with short stories about a girl, named Courtney, and her friends. Things are said like, "Ew, you have a muffin top", a girl lifts her shirt to show her fat and Courtney observes that all she sees are ribs, one girl says "Boys don't like fat girls", and in one instance a boy runs his hand along girls' backs to determine if they're "wearing" bras. Once you get into each chapter the author reassures girls and explains what Courtney is going through, but I found the stories to be distasteful.

I also think the author went overboard with Bible history, particularly Leviticus in regards to how women were "unclean", "untouchable", and kept separate from men because of their periods. The author goes so far as to say that during those times, "girls used to get married and have babies when they weren't much older than you are...". This book is suggested for girls 9 and up! The information is factual, but is it necessary for a puberty book for young girls? We don't want to put ideas in our girls heads about being sexually active at such a young age.

The author tells girls to get fancy fabric (like pink satin or wild print) to line their underwear drawer, then to make a potpourri satchel to put in the drawer. Why do tweens need to do that for their underwear and bras?

Lastly, I found this to be a long, boring book. There are no pictures or illustrations and there are 129 pages. I really wanted to like this book, but I don't think it's a good fit for my innocent daughter who's just starting puberty. Other books are more approachable and tween friendly.

Highly Recommended

It is a truth that we would like to keep our little girls just that, little. However time has a way of moving on and before you know it, girls become women, almost overnight. As a mom and a grandma, a friend and a mentor of many young girls, and of course remembering my own maturing days, the transition is not always an easy one. Questions are asked, or thought and never voiced. Concerns may way become excessive fears if not confronted, as young girls take their journey into their role as a woman.
In this outstanding book by Nancy Rue girls will find a down-to-earth, truthful look at just what is happening to their bodies and why. Discussions are made and explained about the visit of their 'monthly,' to 'smelly feet,' and along with all the why's and how's.
However, don't think this is a text book manual because it is far from that. No, this is written on a one to one, open your heart, ask a question, and just be real manner. Inside the pages of this work, young girls will learn to understand what is going on in their bodies and why. They will be able to associate with the different emotions they are feeling and know that it is normal to feel that way. I definitely will give each of my granddaughters a copy of this book. It is definitely a jewel that every woman to be will cherish. Very, very highly recommended.

An essential resource for moms with preteens

I was looking for a Biblical based book that helped explain how a girl's body changes before and during puberty. My daughter is 10 and we've been reading it together at night before bed. She actually asks for this book opposed to a wide array of books we read. She is very curious about what's happening to her and this author brings the information to her in a way she can relate to and in a style that speaks to young girls. God is very much a driving force by print and inspiration in this book. Thank you

When I first saw it at SKS (Singapore), what made this devotional a must buy for me was the fact that it not only walks me through the New Testament, there is also a short portion by some famous writer who will help you walk through the selected portion taken from an entire chapter that is being highlighted for the day's focus. Then the section 'Walk Closer to God' and 'Worship from the Heart' help you to center what has been shared thus far and leads you into a time of reflection. After that, you are led to read that entire chapter where the verse for the day was taken from. This helps you to read through the entire New Testament in the year. Something I find a wonderful resource for the uninspired and unmotivated. And to further sweeten your experience, there is also a verse from the Old Testament so that you would not miss out on reading the Old Testament which is equally as important as the New Testament. I heard people commenting that there are people who prefer to read the New Testament as opposed to the Old Testament because it is easier to read through it and more digestible. As opposed to reading through the entire Bible, people prefer to just read through the New Testament but I am indeed glad that this devotional offers not just a journey through the entire New Testament but also a chance to savour portions of Scripture from the Old Testament.

I would recommend this devotional to people who have not read through the Bible at all. Reading through the entire Bible in a year can be very challenging and demanding. So why not, for a start, make it a point to read through at least the New Testament and then progress from there into the Old Testament. This is just the right resource for those who desire to do this in the coming year. As opposed to using a one year Bible, I would prefer to use such a resouce because it isn't as dry to read through the Bible book by book and chapter by chapter with a focus point for each day and reflection for the day. If you use a one year Bible, you are merely reading through the entire Bible and it is difficult to have learning points, reflections for the day unless you deliberately seek out particular verses but this devotional is good in that it does that for you.

Reading through the New Testament in one year is a real pleasure with this devotional book. Each day has a reasonable amount to read, and the application is relevant to my life. I love it!

An Outstanding Tool for Developing a Heart for God

The Closer Walk Devotional is an outstanding tool for growing closer to God and increasing your knowledge of His word. The 365 daily devotions are well organized and short enough to be completed in about 15 minutes. Each day you are drawn to worship with a short meditation passage before you read the text for the day. The daily reading then highlights a key verse followed by a inspirational reading from a faithful Christian teacher or leader of the past. The reader is then challenged to deepen his or her relationship with God through obedience and personal worship. Besides the daily readings there are introductions to books or sections of books and short biographies of some of the Christian leaders whose writings are used to teach and inspire us as we read. I can't think of a better resource to purchase for the new year or a better way to begin your daily walk with God.

About the Author
Crystal Bowman loves writing books for kids. Her books come in all shapes and sizes and many of them have become best sellers. Whether her stories are written in playful rhythm and rhyme, or short sentences for beginning readers, she tries to make them so enjoyable that kids will want to read them over and over again. "But the most important part," she says, "is to teach children that God loves them and cares about them very much."

Valerie Sokolova was born in Lvov, Ukraine. Later she moved to Minsk, Belarus, where she graduated from Belarus State Institute of Theatre and Art. She has illustrated over thirty children’s books in Russia. Valerie has also published books in the United States, including King Arthur’s Courage, The Golden Books Treasury of Christmas Joy, Thankful Together and Bella Basset Balerina. Valerie lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband Alex, daughter Nikkie and a friendly wild gecko in the basement.

I love these I Can Read books. You can get the level you need for the age you are teaching and the stories are simple enough but yet informative enough to tell the Bible story and emphasize the lesson. I wish I was wealthy enough to get the whole set of Bible stories from this line of books. I'm getting them one or two at a time. They aren't really too expensive so it works. give them a try.

Lynn Hodges is a professor of music, voice, music theory, and piano, and one of America's most gifted producers, arrangers, and writers of children's music. She is the coauthor of the best-selling I Love You This Much and winner of numerous awards and multiple Dove Award nominations. She and her husband, Jimmy, live in Nashville, Tennessee, with their three children.

Sue Buchanan is the coauthor of the best-selling I Love You This Much. She is also the author of I'm Alive and the Doctor's Dead, Girls Just Gotta Have Fun, Duh-Votions, and Mud Pie Annie, and coauthor of Friends Through Thick and Thin. Sue lives in Nashville, TN.
