Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books for teens, women, and children. GREAT story... BUT....

I absolutely LOVED the idea of this book, and when it got here I absolutely loved to read it with the kids. We do bible study daily in our homeschool, and they are learning God's Word and truth. My point? Well... they (my kids) are now relating a child named Benjamin and some of his friends and intertwining it with the real account in the bible, and I'm just not comfortable with that. I like the story, but now when my kids are telling the story of Jesus' death and resurrection, they are now talking about how "...then Judas gave Benjamin silver..." And I'm forced to tell them "Benjamin isn't part of the REAL story...but yes, the other characters are..." I'm just not sure if this will be a part of our reading any longer, just because I cannot expect them to believe the word of God if there is a fictitious character added to it, as in this book. It's causing confusion with the Word. I suppose for us, we'll stick with the original story in the bible.

I reeallllly liked this book... just cannot use it any longer. Perhaps this won't be a problem for anybody else.. but it was for us.

Resurrection Eggs Ideas!

To start the season off, I finally decided to buy Resurrection Eggs for my family and CCD class. Call me lazy because you could surely make these yourself, but I liked having them done for me instead of searching for the pieces for inside the eggs.... Plus the resource book included came in useful.

If you want an awesome resource to go along with the eggs, you need this book (Benjamin's Box). The story is great and matches the eggs perfectly. It is nicely illustrated and each page tells a story to match the item in the egg. The kids seem to enjoy the story and hearing it from the point of view of a little boy. I highly recommend getting this book to compliment the eggs. My kids ages 5 and 8 really enjoy this book. I am also sharing it with my third grade CCD class and they love it too.

I hid the eggs around my house and told my kids to find them but not open them. Once we had all 12 eggs we took turns reading a page from the book and opening the egg that went along with the page.

I used Benjamin's Box to help me create a printable to match the Resurrection Eggs activity. If you search Teaching Heart Mom on Google and then go to Easter you will see it. You can download it free here. It is five pages. The last page (foldable eggs) you will need to print three times on colored card stock. All other pages get printed once on regular paper. My kids enjoyed making the books and we will refer to them through the season.

The only real issue with the book--but it's a big one for Catholics--is that it refers to the Body and Blood of our Lord in the eucharist as being a symbol or picture of Jesus' flesh and blood, rather than his actual flesh and blood, as in Catholic doctrine.

What a beautiful book to help share such a wonderful message with children about what heaven is and how to get there. I think this a book for every library. Especially still I think it would make a great gift a children's hospital ward.

Great Christmas gifts

I have been hoping to find a book to give my granddaughters to show them how heaven will be, and this book will make the best Christmas gift from me to them! I am looking forward to sitting down with them both to read it together, and I can imagine each of them enjoying the message and the beautiful illustrations as they go to bed each night. They are 8 years old and 6 years old. The younger will enjoy learning to read it and the older child has been very curious about this topic, telling me that heaven may not be that great "because I can't eat in heaven." With her book, Anne shows the Bible verses she used as the foundation for the book and encourages family to get involved with children and grandchildren exploring this vital subject.

Excellent bible for learning readers!

This bible is the well-accepted NIV version...with a twist. It's called the NIrV ('r' for 'readers') due to taking larger words which are fine for older children and adults...and breaking them into smaller words appropriate to 5-8 year old's reading skills.

The meaning/concept has NOT been compromised.

For example...it took me several hours to figure out how to explain "according" to my 5 year old daughter (1 Cor. 15:3b - "that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures.") Granted, a dictionary would have solved this, but I was stubborn and had to figure it out on my own.

Turns out, the NIrV's wording was exactly what I came up with: 1 Cor. 15:3b - "Christ died for our sins, just as Scripture said he would."

My daughter loves being able to read the bible on her own and not having to struggle with the 'grown up words' which can be changed for easier wording.

This is not the case through-out (some words simply can not be substituted)....but it puts her at a good reading point at 5 years old!

Great Bible for Children

This is a great bible for kids. I gave it to my 5, 7, and 9 year old and my 14 year old flipped through it and said she wanted one. It is colorful and easy to read and it has questions that kids ask with the answers. It is a teaching bible and you can flip to almost any page and there will be a small highlighted section with a title like, "Did you know?", or "Live it" or "Words to Treasure" etc. and in these sections, there are facts, explainations, and life lessons for the children. I have found that I like flipping through their bibles becasue there are so many interesting facts and they are quick and easy to read. I have seen my 7 year old wake up excited to read before going to school and there is no greater joy than seeing your child read the bible.

Fantastic minus the 'r' in NIrV

This is a "big kid" Bible--complete set of scripture, leather bound, silver edged pages--the kind you'd want your kid to have for a while. Which is why we bought it for our third-grade-level 6-year-old reader. But now that we have it, we're realizing it was a mistake to get the NIrV because he's frustrated with the verses he's already memorized in church, etc, and he's not interested in memorizing any out of this Bible knowing that he'll have it "wrong" from the NIV. On the positive side, it truly is a lot easier to read, which is nice, so he reads it on his own all the time for his "free reading" time. Basically, I wish I'd just gotten a cheaper NIrV for him to have for a year or so, and then invested in the leather-bound NIV once it was THE Bible he'd have through school. Oh, and the devotionals are fantastic & age appropriate for 6 year olds or 10 year olds.

We have been using this study at a gathering we have at work and is a good fit for us. Approximately 15 minutes video segments and some time for general discussion. Great base for equipping to have some answers to the "whats" and "why's"..

Absolutely wonderful! I know many act as if this is a surface level book but I can promise that wisdom is to be gained. I strongly encourage folks of all beliefs to read this book as it will either challenge or confirm your heart.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from the family home and studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Fun and a Bit Educational

If you want to give your kids a taste of the basic Thanksgiving history, The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks by Jan and Mike Berenstain is a fun choice.

In this new title, the familiar Berenstain bear family delivers some hand made furniture to some friends on a farm. For payment, the family gives Papa some produce - and a fat turkey called Squanto (named, we learn, after the famous "Native Bear" who helped the Pilgrims plant their corn). Papa's mouth is already watering, imagining the turkey complimenting his Thanksgiving dinner, but Sister bear is horrified. Squanto is much too handsome to eat. Besides, she's "never met her Thanksgiving dinner before." She wants to keep Squanto as a pet, but Papa bear isn't convinced.

Trying to distract Sister's mind, Mama suggests Sister and Brother put on a Thanksgiving play for all the relatives. Mama volunteers to sew costumes if Sister will write the script. This does keep Sister's mind off Squanto, and soon Sister, Brother, and their cousins are putting on a fine Thanksgiving show offering the very basics about the Pilgrims and their desire to worship God freely, the Mayflower, and Squanto.

However, when Mama calls "Dinnertime!", Sister suddenly remembers Squanto. But she's relieved when Papa points out the window at the pen he's made for the family's new pet: the turkey Squanto. A fine salmon is the center of the family's Thanksgiving dinner and when prayers of thanksgiving to God go round, Sister adds, "And I am especially thankful for my wonderful new pet, Squanto to the turkey!" "AMEN!" everyone cries.

The last page of the book offers a few conversation-starting questions and project ideas about giving thanks and the Thanksgiving holiday.

What I Like: My four year old loves the Berenstain bear books, and this title is no exception. It's a fun reminder of the basics of why we celebrate Thanksgiving: to remember an important part of history and to thank God for all he gives us. The Christian content in this book is, in my opinion, just right. It is neither an afterthought, nor does it get in the way of the story or become preachy. I'm also pretty picky about books that show kids upset about eating animals; I want my children to have a what I consider a natural attitude about animals being designed for us to eat. However, I do not find this book provokes my preschooler to question eating meat.

What I Dislike: The questions and projects page could be better, but the story itself is a big hit in my household.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Great first bible

I read this with my daughter who has just turned 3 & she really enjoys it. We read it every night before she goes to sleep. It's simple, all the stories are simplified very well. I agree with the other review stating that the snake in the garden is never explained as Satan, etc. I really like how the death of Jesus is played out in this book. It shows that Jesus was whipped & received a crown of thorns without being graphic.
My biggest complaint with this book would be during the story of Noah, it's telling how the last animal boarded the ark & the rain began to pour, but the words are on the wrong pages of the pictures. So when I get to that part, I have to read the right side page first while pointing to the left page pictures, and then the left page words while pointing to the right page pictures, if that makes sense.
Other than that, I love this book. I would suggest it to anyone who has young children. It's a good buy.

Simple, refreshing, needed for most Christians!

This book is a great relief for many of us Christians who have been bogged down in all of the crazy things that other Christians say and expect. We all have problems, but some well-meaning Christians teach us that our problems are because we are not spiritual enough. Or they tell us that we just need to "give them to God." Or they say that we are selfish to get our needs met. Or they tell us just to leave the past behind. All of these cliches can be harmful and misleading.

This book would be especially refreshing for someone who has been involved in a very legalistic or spirit-filled church. It shows that Christianity is not a quick-fix for our lives. And it shows that if we are to be honest, respectable people, we need to deal with our issues instead of running from them or stuffing them under the pews.

This book had a life changing effect for me. I highly recommend this for anyone. I also recommend all of Townsend/Cloud's books. I have 5 of them and found all to be extremely helpful in many aspects of life and relationships.
