Doesn't deliver--Should have been called "40 Days of Organizing Service Projects"

Our church did an all-church study using the 40 Days of Community Devotional and this Study Guide. While I enjoyed the devotional, I found this Study Guide to be a 'bait and switch' experience. It's title held out the hope for fostering more connection with each other but didn't deliver. A more appropriate title would have been: 40 Days of Organizing Service Projects.
I want to make it clear that I am all for the church being a light in the world and actively creating and participating in service projects. What I didn't like was how we were led to believe these groups were about getting to know one another but then the Study Guide moved us very firmly into the domain of 'work groups.' This was not a benign problem. A number of the small groups being started around this book series dissolved due to being thrown into having to navigate conflict way to early in the group development process. You have newly met strangers trying to negotiate what and how and when and where to carry out not just one but TWO major service projects. There is no psychological understanding regarding the stages of group formation in evidence in the creation of this Study Guide.

Twisting scripture 101

The most painful part for this whole study for me is that I can see the direction Warren wants to go isn’t inherently bad. We should love our community and seek to reach them, we should give. But I cannot simply gloss over the way the biblical text is abused and beaten to make these points. Its not like he’s trying to prove things that aren’t present in scripture but the way he seeks to draw them out seems to be the same way one would go about trying to prove a heresy true. I wasn't expecting a purely academic messages with a million footnotes but

While the content was okay, I didn't find it particularly informative or thought provoking. While it may be useful for many, it wasn't for me.
