About the Author
Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books for teens, women, and children. Before publishing, Melody traveled around the world, volunteered in teen ministry, taught preschool, raised two sons, and worked briefly in interior design and later in international adoption. "I think real-life experiences inspire the best fiction," she says. Her wide variety of books seems to prove this theory.

Gentle repetition and warm illustrations

I collect bedtime books. One of our family favorites is Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. Most of our favorite bedtime stories have a gentle and soothing rhythm, comforting repetition, and cozy pictures. Goodnight Angels by Melody Carlson fits right in with our favorite bedtime stories.
We gave this board book to our son for his first birthday. He's a little young to fully enjoy the book. He usually flips through the pages faster than we can read them. But, our 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son both enjoy the story and I know he'll grow into it soon. My three year old relates to the book most, as we often encourage her to say goodbye or goodnight to the things around her as a means of helping ease the transition from one activity/location to the next.
In Goodnight Angels, a little boy says goodnight to being outside, goodnight to his toys, his snacks, his bath, his pets, and his parents before settling into bed. As he drifts off to sleep, he also says goodnight to God, thanking Him for the blessings in his life. Finally, he says goodnight to the angels who will watch over him as he sleeps.
The illustrations by Sophie Allsopp are warm and softly colorful. I love the details of a dog chewing on a slipper in the background, children's artwork posted on the kitchen wall, and toys scattered on the floor and kicked under the bed. Melody Carlson's text has a soothing rhythm and comforting repetition that young children will enjoy hearing as they settle down for the night. She has created another bedtime story to add to our shelf of family favorites. It doesn't quite compare to the classic and enduring nature of Goodnight Moon, but I like the Christian focus that Melody brings into Goodnight Angels.

Fun read but not what I was expecting.

This book is......interesting. They call it a spin on Goodnight Moon so of course, the entire time I was reading it, I was comparing the two and this book did not add up. The rhymes were not as good, the pictures were ok but Goodnight Moon was phenomenal to me so this one was just ok. That being said, I liked the concept. I liked that this book brought prayers and angels in, but I would have liked to see more of that as well. I would have a totally different review if they had not called it a spin on Goodnight Moon. As a stand alone book, it is cute and fun but as a spin from Goodnight Moon, it is not as good.
I would like to explain some of this so you can understand what I liked and did not like. Each page has two lines that rhyme. The problem for me is that they do not read easily, it is as if there are too many words so it does not flow as well as I would like it to and I see this on several pages.
My favorite part of Goodnight Moon is that the colors change from page to page as the sun sets. This book does not do that, it is colorful from beginning to end. To me, that is sad and disappointing but you may like it this way. It is all about personal preference.
For some positive notes, We loved the dog that you can find throughout the pages, the little boy is adorable and this is a good bedtime story. As a board book, it can withstand some toddler wear and tear and we all know how important that is!!

Good Children's Bedtime Book

Our most recent pick from Booksneeze, now Booklook Bloggers, brought us the board book, Goodnight Angels. Excited to share it with Maddy, I waited until she woke up from her nap to open it with her. (She anticipates fun packages just like I do!) Her attention was captured as we read this sweet story. Goodnight Angels is a bedtime book and certainly for younger audiences (preschool/those who are in a board book stage). The story has a simple message of thankfulness expressed through prayer as the main character, a young boy, prepares for bed. Both of his parents and pets, a cat and a dog, are featured in the story as well.
Melody Carson rhymes throughout Goodnight Angels and there is a consistent rhythm through the story, making it easy to read and enjoy. I love rhyming text as Maddy is picking up on sounds and rhythm right now. Maddy enjoyed how she was able to manage the book and turn the pages herself, pausing where she wished to stop and observe or hurry up past a page or illustrations that were not quite as interesting to her. As a nearly two-year-old, Maddy seemed to enjoy the story and pointed out objects she recognized (like a kitty, puppy, etc).
I would recommend this book to parents, grandparents, or anyone looking for a great book to share with a young one in your life. This would make a great addition to a baby shower gift!
